18,000 water recharge pits, 850 water harvesting tanks constructed

Kulgam: The District Development Commissioner of Kulgam in Jammu and Kashmir was informed on Thursday that 18,000 water recharge pits were commissioned in the area and 850 water harvesting tanks were constructed to replenish the groundwater.

District Development Commissioner, Showkat Aijaz Bhat was apprised about the construction of tanks in a meeting chaired by him to review the performance of Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP).

In the meeting, the DDC was briefed in detail about the activities carried out since the inception of the IWMP in the district. It was also given out that underwater conservation of natural resources various springs, gabion structures check dams, Percolation tanks were covered under the Programme.

Highlighting the importance of conservation of water bodies and harvesting of rainwater, the DDC said, “The role of IWMP is of vital importance and impressed upon the concerned officers to redouble their efforts in achieving desirable results to maintain groundwater resources.”

He also urged upon all stakeholders to play their proactive role to save water and make its judicious use.
