New Delhi: As the celebration was on during New Year’s Eve, at least 18 people died in separate incidents across India on Monday, as per the police.
Five men, all 21-years-old, drowned in West Bengal’s Damodar river on Sunday while they were on a picnic. The natives of Sripally were killed after as they went into riverbed’s quicksand, getting sucked into the waters near Burnpur.
“The area where they went for a picnic is not frequented by revellers,” Debasish Banerjee, the former councillor of Asansol municipality said, reported Hindustan Times.
Five other people were killed after their car met with an accident. A truck hit their car in Hooghly district, on their return home from Digha. “One person has been taken to a hospital. We have detained the truck and its driver,” said sub-divisional police officer of Arambag, HK Pai.
A 24-year-old inebriated man crushed four people sitting around a fire on Monday in Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh. People killed in the incident included three minors, police said.
There were four people in the car under alcohol influence, two of them got arrested while one escaped. The driver was also killed in the accident.
In another incident on Monday, three boys were feared drowned in Bhagalpur district of Bihar after a country boat capsized in river Ganga. There were 9 boys on board, going to another village for a picnic.
Bhagalpur’s senior superintendent of police Manoj Kumar said six boys were rescued by local divers, while three boys were still missing.
