1.8 lakh people shifted to relief camps

Vijaywada, October 04: About 1.8 lakh people from vulnerable areas in Krishna district were shifted to 48 relief camps set up in the district as the level in Krishna river started rising.

Of the 1.8 lakh people shifted, around 1.3 lakh belonged to villages in 17 river bed mandals in the district identified as vulnerable. As many as 50,000 people from vulnerable areas in Vijayawada city were evacuated to relief camps in Vijayawada.

It is estimated that 40,000 people were evacuated to safety from Lanka villages in the district. People in Nagayalanka, Mopidevi, Thotavalleru, Challapalli, Avanigadda, Koduru and Ghantasala mandals were also shifted to safer places.

Meanwhile, it is known that seven villages in Jaggaiahpeta mandal and seven villages in Ibrahimpatnam mandal were cut off from the rest of the world.

Meanwhile, 600 people were rescued from Pata Endlalanka in Avanigadda mandal.

Power has been cut to all lanka villages in several mandals, including Avanigadda and Nagayalanka.

The district authorities have brought boats from Godavari districts while 10 helicopters were kept ready to meet any eventuality.

Ministers Parthasarathi and Pedireddy Ramachandra Reddy reviewed the arrangements, besides visiting vulnerable areas in the district.
