Police is the local law enforcement agency for any city and the disciplinary and administrative control of the force is held by the Commissioner of Police. Hyderabad city police traces its origins to 1847 during Asif Jahi kingdom. The Nizam of Hyderabad formed Hyderabad city police in 1847 and Mr. Mohammed Vazeer Jammedar was appointed as the first police commissioner of Hyderabad. The commissioner of Police was then called as “KOTWAL” and was responsible for maintenance of law and order, prevention and detection of crime etc.
During the span of 165 years, 54 persons have been appointed as police commissioners among them 17 were Muslims. Mr. Mohammed Vazeer Jammedar was appointed the first police commissioner of Hyderabad in 1847. Again Muslim police commissioners were appointed in the years 1934, 1945, 1970, 1976 and 2010.
There was a time when the number of Muslims in the police force was 48 to 50 % of the police department. Today Muslims form less than 2 percent of the strength of the total police force.
