Melbourne, April 27: As many as 16 children were injured when a wooden walkway, connecting two classrooms, collapsed at a private school in Sydney today.
New South Wales Ambulance Service said students were on a walkway between two demountable classrooms at Newington College when the accident happened about 8:30am local time today.
The walkway was about 1.5 metres above the ground at the boys’ school and was used for lockers. Some of those lockers fell onto the students, a local media report said.
“They (students) have been treated for a range of minor injuries,” Ambulance paramedic Dave Morris said.
“Some of them are being treated for spinal injuries as a precaution, just as a mechanism of them falling down from there,” he said.
The college headmaster David Mulford, said the walkway was installed just two months ago and the accident was very distressing for the students.
“The boys fell into the rubble with the lockers and then the teachers and some other senior students also helped get the boys out from under the lockers and out of that area,” he said.
