15,000 teachers to hold dharna during university Senate meeting

In a meeting held yesterday at the University of Pune (UoP), the Pune University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) and the Pune University and College Teachers’ Organisation (PUCTO) warned they would resort to a demonstration during the forthcoming Senate meeting of the UoP on Saturday and Sunday to press for various demands of theirs.

As many as 15,000 teachers from various senior colleges affiliated with the UoP also plan to boycott the assessment of BA, BCom, BSc, MA and MCom exam papers to protest against the government indecision on implemention of the Sixth Pay Commission. The teachers also want the UCG letter issued on August 16, 2009, which exempts teachers from the mandatory National Eligibility Test and the State Eligibility Test, should be implemented.

They say the Career and Educational Scheme for college teachers should also be implemented, which will give them extra privileges.

“The UoP has set up different committees, including Local Inquiry Committee (LIC), which will probe all inconsistencies and flaws in all UoP departments. But after investigation we found that it was almost non-functional,” said S P Lawande of PUCTO.

The organisations also demanded that certain UoP employee recruitments should be looked into by setting up an inquiry. “As UoP officials have refused all our demands, on Saturday and Sunday we’ll be on a dharna at the UoP,” Lawande said.
