15 people killed in twin storms in Kolkata and nearby districts

Kolkata: A twin storm last evening created havoc in West Bengal’s capital and other districts, killing 15 people and injuring 50. Police said, of 15 who lost their lives seven were from Kolkata, six from Howrah district and one each from Bankura and Hooghly districts.

As per a report by India Today, the twin nor’westers hit Bengal with record-breaking speeds in last 72 years. The speed of the first storm was recorded to be at 82 km per hour, while the second one was with a force of 98 km per hour.

The heavy rain and winds uprooted over 200 trees and several incidents of wall collapses were reported. The traffic, as well as train schedules, were disrupted due to broken overhead wires.

Departure and arrival of certain flights were also delayed. State Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee instructed the chief secretary of Bengal to prepare a report on the damage caused by the storm.
