Mumbai, November 18A student of class 8 allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his Andheri house on Wednesday. His family says he might have been trying a stunt after watching a cartoon show and did not succeed.
Abhishek Thakkar, 13, was a class 8 student in St Arnold High School at MIDC area of Andheri (East). He lived with his father Himanshi, a businessman, mother, his elder sister, Simran, and younger brother, Shreyas, in near Mahakali Caves in Andheri (East).
“Abhishek and his sister returned from school at 3pm and they had lunch with their mother. After that, Abhishek sat watching a cartoon show on television and others went to sleep,” said Mohan Waghmare, police inspector of MIDC police station.
“Abhishek then went on the mezzanine floor and hanged himself from the ceiling fan using his sister’s duppata,” said Waghamre. “The reason behind the suicide is still not clear and we are investigating from all angles”.
The boy’s father, Himansu, suspects Abhishek might have been trying a stunt and it went wrong.
“After coming from school, both children had lunch. Then, Abhishek watched a cartoon show on TV while other family members went to sleep,” he said. “Around 5pm when one of his friends called him to play, he asked him to wait for five minutes. Abhishek then went up to the mezzanine floor and did not return.”
He added that when he did not come down after half-an-hour, Simran went up to call him and found him hanging. “He had tied his neck with her duppatta. We rushed him to Holy Spirit Hospital but he was declared dead,” said Himanshu.
“My brother always asked me to tie his shoe laces,” said Simran. “I was shocked that he hanged himself.”
The police said they had registered an accidental death and investigation is on.
