New Delhi: The BRICS Labour & Employment Ministers Meet in China on Thursday ended with adoption of a declaration on a number of areas of critical importance to all member states and sought strengthening collaboration and cooperation on them, an official statement said.
Labour and Employment Minister Bandaru Dattatreya represented India in the meeting in China’s Chonqqing.
China is the chair for the BRICS Labour & Employment Ministers’ Meet for 2017.
The Declaration covered areas including “Governance in the Future of Work”, “Skills for development in BRICS”, “Universal and sustainable social security systems”, “BRICS Network of Labour Research Institutions”, “BRICS Social Security Cooperation Framework” and “BRICS entrepreneurship research”.
At the meet, Dattatreya called on the BRICS countries to collaborate to address the challenges of the “Future of Wor”‘ emerging in the area of non-standard forms of employment like part-time work, temporary work, fixed term contracting and subcontracting, home based work and others which are changing the character of labour markets.
He said that networking of labour institutes of BRICS nations could create mechanisms for regular exchange of information and creating further areas of cooperation in this and other common areas.
The Minister reiterated that India has always adhered to the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities in the Global Supply Chain and was pleased that the BRICS countries echoed this policy stand.
Dattatreya added that technology could be a critical enabler for creating efficient and transparent labour governance structure, while emphasising that skilling not only increases the employability of workers but also productivity of employers which leads to a cycle of increased production, increased revenue stream and increased GDPs.
India endorsed the BRICS Action Plan for Poverty Alleviation and Reduction through Skills.
