12% reservation for Muslims and STs may be delayed

TRS had made a promise that it will provide 12% reservation to Muslims and STs. Organizations belonging to Muslims and STs have been exerting their pressure on the Govt. to declare reservation before the notification of appointing 1 lakh persons. Govt. of Telangana had appointed two commissions in March this year to study social, economic and educational status of Muslims and STs so that these categories could be provided 12% quota.

People have apprehensions in their minds about 12% reservation since in the past courts had raised objections with regard to 4% quota for Muslims under BC-E category which was granted by Congress government led by Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. This case is pending in the Supreme Court. Govt. of Telangana has recently taken a decision to be a party to this case in Supreme Court and support quota for Muslims.

Mr. K. Chandrasekhar Rao has been making an attempt to remove these apprehensions by saying that TRS Govt. is bound by its promise. It will follow the procedure adopted by Tamil Nadu Govt. in providing reservations exceeding 50% which it did by enacting a special legislation in State Assembly. Govt. of Telangana is waiting for the reports of the commissions appointed for studying reservation policy.
