Hyderabad, August 17: Sudden rain and thundershowers lashed the city on Monday evening, bringing respite to the people from the scorching heat.

The mercury in the State Capital was hovering over the 32 degree Celsius-mark for over a fortnight and the past few days had turned humid and torrid causing untold hardship to people.

The day began on an oppressive note with hot and humid conditions and even as people reeled under their onslaught, the heavens opened up towards evening much to the joy of the citizens. The Traffic came to a standstill with the water logged areas such as busy Dilsukhnagar, Moazamjahi Market area, Koti bankstreet, Malakpet, Chapel Road and at other parts of city.

However, people had to endure the regular spectacle of water-laden streets and power cuts following the downpour. The Metrological department officials told that a total of 11mm of rain was recorded in Hyderabad.

Several areas of the city went without power for some time in the evening even as office-goers returned home drenched in huge traffic snarls.
