Hyderabad, October 11: The death of a 10-year-old boy, who got crushed under the wheels of a tipper, triggered protests from locals of Chenna Reddy Nagar in the city on Sunday. Locals damaged its window panes and later set the tipper on fire.
The deceased, R Teja Reddy, was a class V student of St Joseph School at Habsiguda. He was cycling back home from a repair shop when he came under the wheels of the tipper, police said. The incident took place under Amberpet police station limits. He was the son of Srinivas Reddy, a centring contractor from Patel Nagar in Amberpet.
On Sunday morning, Teja found the rear wheel of his bicycle flattened and took it to a repair shop at the nearby Chenna Reddy Nagar. After getting the wheel repaired, he was cycling back home, when he slowed down near a speed-breaker. Suddenly, a sand-laden tipper came from behind and hit Teja’s cycle and he fell down. The tipper ran over Teja killing him instantly, according to police.
Angered over rash and negligent driving of the tipper driver, locals pelted stones and later set fire to the vehicle.
Wheels of the vehicle were also set ablaze and the locals also tried to set fire to the diesel tank. Peace committee members and police had to struggle to stop protestors. A fire tender rushed to the spot to doused the flames.
The tipper driver, Niranjan Shah was nabbed by locals and handed over to police. Amberpet police have registered a case under Section 304A (rash and negligent act leading to death) against the driver.
