10 more medical colleges to come up in Andhra

Hyderabad, April 12: Here is a good news for doctor aspirants. Nearly ten new medical colleges are likely to come up in the state in private sector over the next three to four years.

As a result, around 750-1,000 more seats will be available for doctor aspirants in addition to about 4,000 medicine seats existing in the state.

A high-power committee constituted by the state government to make recommendations on the need for additional medical colleges and additional number of MBBS seats in the state, recently recommended for permitting reputed private hospitals to establish new medical colleges in the state.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Central government also suggested the state government to set up new medical colleges in the private sector. Accordingly, the state government today directed the authorities concerned to issue an open notification inviting applications from reputed private hospitals.

The committee will shortly issue a notification inviting applications from societies/trusts having hospitals with more than 300 beds functioning for more than five years with full capacity, for setting up medical colleges in the state.

The applications would be scrutinised by the committee and recommend to the government for grant of Essentiality Certificate.

“After physical verification of the infrastructure, all the intending institutions having the best infrastructure as per MCI norms would be considered for sanctioning relevant permissions to establish new medical colleges,” said a senior official.

The committee has also recommended certain measures for improving the quality of medical education.
