At least ten people are feared to have died and eight others injured as a train ran over them at Gotlam station, 10 km away from Vizianagaram, in eastern Andhra Pradesh.
Senior railways officers quashed rumours of a train collision and said that ten were feared dead in the accident.
The incident took place at around 6.50pm when rumours spread about a fire in Elappi (Kerala)-Dhanbad Express train, triggering panic among its passengers, a spokesman of East Coast railway told.
As people from the stationary train started getting down in panic, the Rayagada-Vijayawada passenger train coming from the opposite direction ran over them, killing ten and injuring at least eight others.
Fire and emergency officials have been rushed to the spot.
