10 cops suspended for embezzling money seized from raid

Ludhiana, August 04: As many as 10 police officers, including one sub-inspector (SI) and five assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs), have been suspended on charges of embezzlement of money seized in a raid at a lottery shop in November last year.

A case was registered last evening against the 10 policemen by the Division Number 6 police.

The suspended police personnel include S-I Bhagat Singh, Amarjit Singh, Narinder Singh, Ranjit Singh, Rajinder Pal Singh, Surjit Singh (all five ASIs), munshi Jaswinder Singh, Charanjit Singh, Gurjit Singh and Desa Singh (all three head constables).

They were posted at different police stations of the city and put under suspension on Sunday by the Ludhiana SSP after registration of cases against them.

Complainant Jagdeep Singh, a lottery seller, said a police party had raided his shop on November 12, 2008, and seized Rs 78,000 from his shop.

He added seven persons were picked up who were then booked in different cases. On Jagdeep Singh’s complaint, an inquiry was conducted by SP City I Harsh Bansal who found the policemen guilty.

A video grab of the raid proceedings captured by the complainant through a CCTV camera was also submitted.

Six years ago in a similar fashion, Jagdeep Singh’s father Jagjit Singh alias Bittu Chawla and his partner Subhash Katty, had done a sting operation to show how a dozen police personnel were taking bribe.

Munshi misbehaves with mediapersons

Last night when some mediapersons went to the Division Number 6 police station to get details of the case against the 10 policemen, munshi Surinder Kumar, who was reportedly in an inebriated condition, misbehaved with them.

On the complaint of mediapersons, the munshi was sent to the Police Lines as a punishment posting.
