Many Hyderabadis are notorious for their laid back attitude. Half-an-hour or one-hour behind the schedule is not considered delay. Same is the case with the corporators of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
The GHMC’s General Body meeting was originally scheduled to start at 10 AM on Saturday. However, except for a few including Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain and officials, a majority of corporators did not turn up for the meeting. As a result, the GHMC meeting could not start due to lack of required quorum.
Finally, the meeting started at 10.35 AM on the completion of quorum. Senior Parliamentarian and Secunderabad MP Bandaru Dattatreyya was visibly upset with the attitude of young corporators. During his speech in the council he advised corporators to become punctual. He said 10 AM should mean 10 AM and not 10.30 AM. He said if the corporators felt that 10 AM was too early for them to reach the GHMC Headquarters, then they should convened the meeting at 12 noon. Making a clarification, the Mayor said although he was present, the other corporators did not reach the council hall on time.
Later, some corporators took the issue lightly and wondered how half-an-hour delay could be considered as delay in Hyderabad.
Interestingly, of 148, only 108 corporators participated in the meeting. Three Lok Sabha MPs – Bandaru Dattatreyya (Secunderabad), Visveshwar Reddy (Chevella) and Malla Reddy (Malkajgiri) participated in the meeting. MLAs who participated in the meeting include Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Teegala Krishna Reddy, Prakash Goud, Kausar Mohiuddin, Jaffer Hussain, R Krishnaiah and Ahmed Balala. Members of Legislative Council Syed Aminul Hassan Jafferi, MS Prabhakar, Venkat Rao and Mohammd Saleem also participated in the meeting.
However, Deputy Chief Minister Mahmood Ali, city minister T Padma Rao and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi did not participate in the meeting although they are part of the GHMC as ex-officio members. Rajya Sabha MPs from the city too did not participate in the meeting. (INN)
