1 US veteran Commits Suicide Every 80 Minutes

The Center for a New American Security (CNAS) in a report titled ‘Losing the Battle: The Challenge of Military Suicide,’ published in The Huffington Post said “America is losing its battle against suicide by veterans and service members.”

The CNAS study revealed both the cases of suicide and those of suicidal attempts have considerably increased among the US military veterans since the start of their active duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It said, from 2005 to 2010, approximately one service member has attempted suicide every 36 hours. In 2009 alone, 1,868 veterans of the two wars committed suicide, the report added.

The authors added that, “As more troops return from deployment, the risk will only grow.”
