Mumbai, August 15:A 75-year-old man was killed when a slab collapsed on him in south Mumbai. In a separate incident, two people were injured when part of a vacant, dilapidated building collapsed in Parel on Saturday. In the first incident, the slab of Aashirwad building number 1 on NM Joshi Marg at Byculla collapsed early morning. Police said the victim Sunil Panchal was rushed to Nair hospital by locals, where he was declared dead before admission by the doctors.
In the second incident at 7.30 pm, two people were injured after a portion of Laxmi Niwas near KEM Hospital in Parel, collapsed. Sources said the building located on Babasaheb Ambedkar Road was owned by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) and was in a dilapidated state. It had been vacated in 2009. “The two injured were rushed to the nearby KEM Hospital. The identity of the injured has not been ascertained yet. The building was partially empty,” a fire official said, requesting anonymity for lack of authorisation to talk to the media. Four fire engines were pressed into service.
Of these, about 24 buildings in the island city had been declared extremely dangerous by the MRRB. Laxmi Nivas in Parel was one of them.
