One passenger injured when three bogies of Chennai-bound Kaveri Express derailed near Kuppam in Chittoor district in the early hours of Monday. The mishap occurred when huge boulder fell on the track and damaged the engine. As a result the train derailed and the passengers had to escape from the bogies tilted to a side on the track.
According to railway police sources the boulders from the nearby Pulikonda hills fell on the tracks following heavy rainfall. The three bogies which went off the track include one AC coach. As the train driver applied emergency brakes after noticing a huge boulder on the track, the train dragged for 300 metres before coming to a halt. The momentum caused the three bogies to derail.
