In such a case, the ability or the competence of the teachers is not at all considered whereas a good teacher can only lay the foundation for a fearless cultured and sophisticated Society.
Prof. Sunaina Singh, Vice Chancellor of English and Foreign Languages University expressed these thoughts. She was delivering Teachers’ Day lecture on “Teacher and Society” at Maulana Azad National Urdu University yesterday.

Potential habitable exoplanet found around a red dwarf

Astronomers have discovered a new super-earth in the habitable zone around the red dwarf star Gliese 163.

The exoplanet ‘Gliese 163c’ has a mass of 6.9 times that of Earth and an orbital period of 26 days.

Astronomers using the European Southern Observatory HARPS telescope (or High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher) found it orbitting a red dwarf star 49 light years away in the Dorado constellation, the Daily Mail reported.

“Gliese 163c could have a size between 1.8 to 2.4 Earth radii, depending if it is composed mostly of rock or water, respectively,” researchers said.

T.V.Cables to be removed-GHMC starts campaign for international conference

GHMC invited the attention of the cable operators in the city to remove TV cables hanging on electric poles but they didn’t pay heed to it. Thanks to the International Bio-Diversity Conference, GHMC has started to remove all such TV cables at least from two major roads, namely; Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital to International Convention Center, Madhapur which covers road No.1, to road No.36, Banjara Hills and the main road from Afzal Gunj to Sanatnagar which covers Assembly, Khairtabad, Punjagutta, Ameerpet, Sanjeeva Redy nagar & Erragadda.

Maoists numbers, military potential increasing: Shinde

Stating that Maoist cadres in the country were gaining in strength, union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde warned Thursday that they were displaying the military potential to form new battalions.

“Naxalism continues to pose a significant challenge. There are indicators about increase in the number of trained and armed cadres, reorganisation of military potential for formation of new battalions,” Shinde said.

They were displaying potential for “the creation of well-developed indigenous capacity for accretions to their arsenal”, he added.

Couple shot dead just after marriage in Pak

A young man and a woman were gunned down while leaving a court in Pakistan’s Punjab province after getting married against the wishes of their families, officials said on Thursday.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at the district court complex in Sargodha district, 80 km from Lahore, the provincial capital.

Police said Yasmin, 19, had eloped with a relative, 21-year-old Nasir Awan, and appeared before a civil judge to get married.

They told the judge that their lives were in danger as their families were unhappy with their decision to get married.

Uddhav says Digvijay is mad, never mind what granddad wrote

Stung by Congress leader Digvijay Singh’s statement that Maharashtra’s Thackeray family originally hailed from Bihar, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray hit back Thursday, saying Digvijay was “mad”.

“That man (Digvijay Singh) is mad,” an irritated Thackeray burst out to reporters who questioned him on the issue.

The Congress leader, however, was only quoting from a book penned by Uddhav’s grandfather, Prabodhankar Thackeray, father of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

Chinese Defence Minister gives Rs 1 lakh as ‘gift’ to IAF pilots

It was an unusual gift from Chinese Defence Minister Gen Liang Guang Lie to two Indian Air Force pilots — Rs one lakh in cash.

The pilots were given cash in two envelopes after they flew the visiting minister by special IAF aircraft from Mumbai to Delhi on Monday, sources told PTI here on Wednesday.

They said after seeing off Liang, the pilots checked their ‘unusual gift’ in sealed envelopes and then realised it was Rs one lakh cash in Indian currency.

Cyber crime targets 5.4 mn Australians

About 5.4 million Australians were targeted by cyber crimes, which cost the country 1.65 billion Australian dollars ($1.68 billion) in the past 12 months, according to Norton’s Cybercrime report 2012 released Thursday.

Hackers and cyber criminals were diverting their attention to new platforms such as smart phones and social networking, the report by the anti-virus company revealed.

Globally, there were more than 556 million victims and the cost were $110 billion, reported Xinhua.

If given a chance former India captain Sourav Ganguly is ready to take up the coaching job of Indian cricket team in the near future.

“Obviously, I have interest in coaching but only time will tell what can happen in future. If the BCCI feels that I can be a good coach, I will be ready. I feel I can create a difference in terms of the ability, form and development of the players. That will be the way for me to repay the game,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by a news channel.

Ganguly, once a strong advocate of foreign coaches, feels that it is time an Indian take over the top job.

Costa Rica hit by 7.6 magnitude earthquake three killed

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale has has struck off in Costa Rican capital San Jose, the US Geological Survey said on Wednesday.

According to USGS, the major quake struck near the Pacific Coast at 8:42 am and the epicenter is reported to be in western Costa Rica about 141 kms from San Jose and 80kms from the south of the town of Liberia.

Two teenagers killed in Sri Lanka explosion

At least two teenagers were killed and three children injured today due to an accidental explosion in Sri Lanka’s North West town of Kalpitiya, police said.

The victims in the beach in Kandakuliya had played with an object which was washed ashore around 3 pm local time.

One of them was said to have slammed the object against a turtle shell when it exploded, they said.

US is absolutely better off now: Barack Obama

Under a barrage of attack from the opposition over his record as President, Barack Obama has asserted that the US economy was definitely better off now than it was four years ago when thousands of jobs were being lost.

Obama, who took over the government when the American economy was struggling with recession, pointed out that as many as 800,000 jobs were being lost in a month at the time, suggesting that things have but improved.

Govt will try to push quota bill in Parliament today

Indian Mujahideen in focus at top police meet

Amid government’s concern on the issue of home-grown terror, the annual meet of country’s top police officers will for the first time have a special session on banned terrorist group Indian Mujahideen (IM), most of whose members are Indians.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will also have separate interactive session with DGPs and IGPs of all state at the three-day conference beginning tomorrow during which they will brief him on key policing and internal security issues.

TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao on Wednesday expressed confidence that the separate Telangana issue will be decided this month.

“Telangana issue will be decided this month. There need not be any doubts over this,” Rao, a Lok Sabha member, told reporters here before leaving for New Delhi to attend Parliament session.

He indicated that there are chances of talks over the contentious issue during his stay in Delhi.

The TRS president had been saying for long that he has got “signals” and “assurance” over formation of the separate state from the Central leaders in Delhi.

Income Tax Refunds scam unearthed

Central Crime Station of the police unearthed income tax refunds scam and arrested six tax consultants and an outsourcing employee of income tax department.

Dy. Commissioner of Police, Detective Department, Mr. P. John Victor told that Mr. Shaik Mohammed Jehangir had. contacts for five years with the outsourced income tax employee Ms. Anji Rani. Taking advantage of these contacts, Mr. Jehangir filed fake returns of income tax and got them attested by Ms. Anji Rani for the period from 2010 to 2012 by entering fake data.
