Politics on Tipu’s Tableau and beyond….

It was very pleasing to see the Tipu Sultan’s tableau in Republic Day parade at the national capital, New Delhi. The decision to propose Tipu’s theme, along with three other themes representing Karnataka’s history and culture, could be an honest move by the present government. But in the wake of Lok Sabha elections it does send unusual messages to the educated mass.

New mining leases will be given soon- Kaushik Mukherjee

Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee on Wednesday said that Karnataka will accelerate the process of issuing leases to mine iron ore in the mineral-rich districts to enhance the raw material supply to the steel industry.

“We have decided to give soon new mining leases to achieve the 30 million tonnes of iron ore annual production set by the Supreme Court earlier and clarified Monday,” he said.

Mohammad Sayeed conferred with doctorate

Mr. Mohammad Sayeed, president, Association for Service to Humanity was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in “Social Concern with specialization in concern for the neglected”. Dr. Edwin Daniel presented him the doctorate on the occasion of National Convention of India Virtual University (IVU) on ‘online education’ at Bharathi Vidya Bhavan here on January 25.

Shahida Aslam elected as new president of NWF

Shahida Aslam a Mangalore based activist was unanimously elected as the new president of National Women’s Front at Puttanathani in Kerala on January 26.

Ms. Aslam was the Karnataka state unit president of the organization, earlier. A freelance journalist hailing from Mangaloreholding a masters degree in mass communication and journalism was part of the editorial board of Prastutha, a Mangalore based Kannada fortnightly. She had also worked for a women’s monthly magazine and was an office bearer of Karnataka women’s writers forum.

HKBK hosts intercollegiate State level Cricket tournament

HKBK College of Engineering, hosted a three day intercollegiate State level staff tennis ball cricket tournament
of Visvesvaraya Technological Universitys (VTU) here, from January 27th to 29th.

Over 40 teams from Karnataka are participating. The matches are being played at HMT, Reva and Sir. MVIT cricket ground, Yelahanka.

The inaugural ceremony was held at the HMT grounds at 9.30 A.M., Mr. Abdul Hameed S.A, administrator, HKBK Group of Institutions declared the tournament open and wished the teams to perform well. He also instructed them to play matches in the true games spirit.

Laxity leds the B’lore-Nanded Express to burst into flames: Report

The preliminary investigation report by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Bangalore, has noted that an “advertent act or act of negligence on the part of unidentified passenger(s) or person(s)” was the likely to cause fire in the AC coach-B1 of Bangalore-Nanded Express on December 28, 2013, which claimed 26 lives.

On Thursday, the report has been sent to Chief Commissioner, Railway Safety, by CRS Bangalore S K Mittal, states that the accident is classified under category “Error in working near railway line.”

Woman found murder at her house

On Tuesday evening, an elderly woman was found murdered at her house in Gurumurthy Reddy Layout, B Narayanapura in Mahadevapura police station limits.

Police suspect it to be a murder for gain, as the gold ornaments the woman was wearing were missing.

The victim is identified as Kondamma, 63. She was living alone in a portion of the two-storey house on the ground floor, whereas her son Srinivasulu and family lived on the first floor. Srinivasulu works as an electrical contractor.

According to Rajen Mehrotra, Industrial Relations Institute of India president, men need to be extra cautious and more so, mind their language as the Act ascertain zero tolerance towards sexual harassment.

For the law defines “sexual harassment” as “unwelcome acts like making sexually coloured remarks, physical advances and contacts or demand or request for sexual favours, which cause distress.”

E-mail threat to blow up Bangalore International Airport

An anonymous e-mail threatening to blow up the Kempegowda International Airport Limited (KIAL) here prompted authorities to step up security.

“We have received a bomb threat here yesterday,” KIAL said in a statement here.
An FIR has been lodged with Bangalore Police, it said adding all airlines and partners have been put on alert.

The airport has been on high alert since January 26 and would continue to be so till the month end, KIAL said, adding that security has been strengthened in the facility by intensifying checking and patrolling.

Fruit seller held for rape

On Monday, an 18-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by her cousin at a desolate house in Lingarajapuram in Banaswadi police limits. The incident bring to light after the victim made a complaint to the police on Tuesday evening.

The victim, who is a manual labourer, lived with her elder sister, as she had lost her parents at a young age. Roopesh Kumar (22), the suspect, a fruit vendor, lived in the same vicinity. On Monday afternoon, Roopesh had ask over his cousin, who was on her way to work, to go with him to a friend’s house and she accompanied him.

Police detained a man for ‘molesting’ Malaysian student on flight

On Tuesday, the Bajpe police here arrested a 36-year-old man from Bangalore on the charge of molesting a Malaysian student on board a Mangalore-bound flight.

The victim, is a student at a private Dental college, made a complaint to the police that Ankur Agarwal “molested” her throughout the journey from Bangalore to Mangalore.
Agarwal, is a quality checker at a private hospital in Bangalore, was sitting next to her in the flight. She alleged, he “touched her in a sexual way on the pretext of falling asleep”.

Bahrain beckons Indian firms to invest

Bahrain Tuesday invited Indian businesses to invest in the Persian Gulf island country, taking advantage of its strategic location, favourable investment climate and access to markets.

“Bahrain is the best gateway for Indian investors in the region as it has a direct access to the Gulf Cooperation Council’s (GCC) largest market, Saudi Arabia, via a causeway to the commercial centres of the eastern province,” Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Esam Abdulla Fakhoro said at an international trade meet here.

Girl plunges from the terrace and die

On Monday evening, Harika Raj, a class X student take her life by allegedly jumping off a three-storey building at Chikkajala.

Harika Raj,16, was a student of Oxford English School in Shakti Nagar, Chikkajala, was the eldest daughter of Rajkumar, a second Division Assistant working at the Vidhana Soudha.

Man arrested on the charge of theft

Nanjundaiah, 34, a resident of Laggere, was arrested by Chikkajala police on the charge of theft and recovered stolen ornaments worth Rs 16 lakh from him.

According to police, the suspect would identify “gullible” passengers at bus stands and rob them of their valuables. He recently robbed a bag of ornaments from a mother-daughter duo, while they were unfocused.

He then trade in the ornaments at several jewellery shops across the City and borrowed money, police said.

About 550 gm of ornaments which he had stolen was reovered by the police.

Four held on the charge of robbery

Four persons have been arrested by theYelahanka police on the charge of robbery and recovered stolen ornaments worth Rs 9 lakh from them. The arrested are Jaffar, 31, Shabharish, 22, a resident of Kogilu village, Renuka, 36, and Seema, 31, all from Bhadravati.

According to police, the suspects operated as a team and under fired people at bus stands and public places. They would identify men wearing ornaments and introduce themselves under some pretext and collect their mobile phone numbers.

Visually challenged woman mowed down by BMTC bus

BMTC bus driver claimed the life of a visually challenged womanby his Rash driving in Madiwala on Sunday.

The victim Prameela is 23-year-old, a native of Doddabiranahalli in Chikmagalur district. She was staying in a hostel for visually challenged people in Shivajinagar. Prameela’s family member Vikas and friend Shruthi were also injured in the accident.

The victim had come to Hongasandra to visit her uncle for the first time. Vikas, 12years-old, had gone to Shivajinagar to pick her up, when her friend Shruthi decided to accompany the duo.

Pomp, pageantry mark Republic Day in Karnataka

Pomp and pageantry marked the 65th Republic Day celebrations in Karnataka Sunday, with Governor H.R. Bharadwaj hoisting the tricolour and inspecting an impressive parade here.

On a sunny day, an air force helicopter showered rose petals at the podium at the Field Marshal Manekshaw ground in the city centre where the governor, Chief Minister Siddarmaiah and others were seated.

After unfurling the flag, Bhardwaj inspected the parade of the armed forces and others including the police, National Cadet Corps, Scouts and Guides, and hundreds of school children.

Fish oil can increase brain size: study

Eating more fish can give you a bigger brain and also protect against diseases such as Alzheimer’s, a new study has claimed.

People with higher levels of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil may have larger brain volumes in old age equivalent to preserving one to two years of brain health, according to the study.

Shrinking brain volume is a sign of Alzheimer’s disease as well as normal ageing, researchers said.

For the study, the levels of omega-3 fatty acids in red blood cells were tested in 1,111 women who were part of the Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study.

UAE to participate in Partnership Summit in Bangalore

Minister of Economy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, will lead his country’s delegation to the Partnership Summit 2014 to be held in Bangalore, India, from Jan 27-29.

The UAE delegation will include, among others, representatives of the ministry of economy, Dubai Export Development Corporation, Dubai Foreign Investment Office, Dubai Aluminium (DUBAL) and Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq).

Husband suspects wife fidelity and killed her

On Saturday, a 31-year-old housewife was found murdered at her house in Kaverinagar.
The late lamented Jayamma was a native of Madanapalli in Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh.

Jayamma was the second wife of Nagaraj, a labourer, who is absconding since the time of her murder. The couple were married recently and living at a rented house in Kaverinagar. on Friday afternoon,the neighbours last saw Jayamma when she was quarrelling with her husband over a trivial issue.

Tight security for Republic Day in Bangalore

Police enhanced security and stepped up vigil to ensure peaceful celebrations of the 65th Republic Day Sunday in the city and across the state.

“We have deployed about 2,000 of our personnel across the city and are keeping a close watch on the movement of people and vehicles to prevent any untoward incident and maintain law and order for the Republic Day event,” Bangalore Police Commissioner R. Aurodakar told IANS Saturday.

Bangalore –first city to gets free Wi-fi service

A happy moment for Bangalore, as it is the first city in the country to provide free Wi-fi services to the people. The “Namma Wifi” service launched here on Friday can now be accessed at five different locations. Soon after two months, it will be extended to 10 other areas.

Brigade Road, M G Road, bus stations at Yeshwanthpur, Koramangala and Shanthinagar and CMH Road in Indiranagar are the five locations where the service can be accessed.
