Suspected Yasin Bhatkal aide detained

A suspect , believed to be an active member of Indian Mujahideen has been detained by the authorities in Abu Dhabhi, last week. Indian agencies are trying hard to establish the man’s identity and seek his deportation.

Thirty-two-year old, Abdul Wahid Siddibapa, the alleged suspect, is said to be from Bhatkal and also a distant relative of Riyaz and Yasin Bhatkal, the alleged founders of Indian Mujahideen.

Khazi of Ullal dargah no more

Khazi Assayyid Abdurrahman Al Bukhari, a renowned religious leader of Sunni muslims of coastal Karnataka and Kerala passed away in Kerala on February 1.

Popularly known as ‘Tajul Ulema’ and ‘Ullal Thangal’, the Khazi of Ullal was 97 years old and was suffering from multiple age-related illnesses for the past few years. Thousands of people assembled near his house near Payyannur, soon after the news of his demise spread.

It would be ‘harassment to both parties’ if divorce is not granted, court tells couple

A couple that separated only just a week after they were wedded was at last granted a divorce, 13 years after they had married.

A division bench of the High Court of Karnataka in its judgement delivered a verdict that since the marriage had once and for all broken down, it would amount to “harassment” if the court did not consider their case and grant a divorce.

Mariyam’s relatives want change in medical policies

Three-year-old Mariyam Kauser, has been in a critical condition since December due to medical negligence of doctors of Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic. Her relatives protested and urged the government to take strict action against the doctors responsible for her condition and also in such other cases, here on February 1.

Two doctors had been terminated, while two others were suspended for medical negligence in Mariyam Kauser’s case.

“Ayana,” Mobile mammography unit launched

On Tuesday, Minister of Health and Family Welfare U T Khader launched “Ayana,” a mobile mammography unit, set up by Narayana Health in the City.

The mobile unit, outfitted with a mammography machine and a computed radiography system to digitise and scan images, will consist of an all women team- a driver, two nurses and a cleaner. A TV is also installed outside the vehicle will play videos on breast cancer to create awareness among the masses.

Man running unofficial study centre arrested

Jason D’Souza, 28, a resident of Yelahanka New Town was arrested by RT Nagar police for cheating students by issuing them fake certificates. He was allegedly running a study centre against the law.

As per police, Jason had advertised that his study centre – Ashirvad Vidya Kendra in HMT Layout, RT Nagar – was affiliated to different universities, boards and institutions of higher education, claiming to offer programmes sponsored by the Board of Secondary Education and Madhya Bharath Gwalior University. Many had enrolled for PU and appeared for exams.

Anjuman College of Education gets 100% results in B. Ed

Anjuman College of Education, Bhatkal secured 100% results in the B.Ed. final examination of Karnataka University, Dharwad held here recently.

Almost 96% of the students passed with either distinction or first class i.e 32 students got distinction and 34 first class. Interest-free loans to students from economically backward families –State Govt

Students from the economically weaker sections pursuing general degree courses in the State can now be benefitted through interest-free educational loans.

The State government has made a decision to implement the Rajiv Gandhi Loan Scholarship Scheme for students in general degree and postgraduate degree courses from the academic year 2013-14.

All the colleges run by the State government, universities and aided colleges (for aided courses only) will be applicable for this scholarship excluding professional courses.

Karnataka Govt. planing to observe Tipu’s birth anniversary soon

Rash driving by the student leads to serial accident

On Thursday night, three persons, including a two-year-old boy, were injured in a serial accident after an engineering student drove his car recklessly near Meenakshi Mall at Hulimavu

Two school buses, an autorickshaw and a car were also smashed up in the accident. The injured were rushed to a nearby private hospital and are said to be out of danger. Sachin was arrested on the charge of rash and negligent driving by the police.

Teenage drivers dying in auto accidents is on the rise

City traffic police conducted a study which revealed that fatal road accidents involving teens are on the rise over the past two years.

The report that was released by the police on Friday states that most of the young victims are two-wheeler riders.The report is both a macro and micro-analysis of all road accidents reported from 2011 to 2013.

The highest number of people who are killed in road accidents are two-wheeler riders in the age group of 19 and 35. It is also noticed that the causalities reported in the age group of 1 to 12 are also on the rise from the past two years.

Abdul Nasser Madani ‘s interim bail plea rejected by SC

The bail application on medical grounds by Abdul Nasser Madani, an accused in the 2008 Bangalore serial blasts case, was rejected by the Supreme Court. However, the SC has directed the Karnataka government to provide Madani with medical treatment in a hospital till he undergoes an eye surgery, here on January 28.

Mining near BIT campus leads to protest

Students of Bearys Institution of Technology (BIT), Innoli protested against the mining activity going on in a quarry near the institution on January 28.

The students complained that the noise and air pollution caused in the campus, due to proximity of mining, was affecting their studies and also causing health hazards. They also said that ponds dug in the area as part of the mining process have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

A Kindergarten student breaks Guinness record

On Friday, a five-year-old boy in the City entered the Guinness Book of World Records by skating under 39 Toyota Qualis cars in 28 seconds.

Gagan S is a kindergarten student at Florence School in Basveshwaranagar, son of Satish, who was employed at a washing machine service centre.

“Gagan was always passionate about skating. He started attending skating classes just one-and-a half years ago. His dedication and commitment at such a young age motivated us and we wanted him to achieve something in skating,” said a proud Satish.

Bike rider went to wish his friend and met with an accident

On early Thursday morning, a bike rider smash his vehicle into the parapet of Hebbal flyover and fell to his death 30 feet below. The victim was identified as Joseph Gerald, 23, died of head injuries at M S Ramaiah Hospital and his friend Sunil Subramanya, 24, who was riding pillion, suffered severe injuries.

Gerald was a resident of Chikkabanavara and Subramanya were working at a private company near Shanthinagar. Subramanya had joined the firm just four days ago. The duo were on their way to Mattikere to wish a friend on his birthday at midnight when the accident occurred.

Man committed suicide by hanging on tree

A 27year-old man’s body was found hanging from a tree near Sanghi Temple in Hayathnagar area here on Wednesday evening.

The victim’s elder brother spotted the body and informed the police.

According to police officials,“The youth Kranti Kumar, a resident of Koheda village, went to work in a nearby ice cream factory on Wednesday and did not return. In the evening hours his body was found hanging from a tree near Sanghi Temple“.

Goods vehicle toppled, driver killed

On early Thursday morning, a goods auto driver was killed on KG Road after he lost control over the vehicle and came under it as it toppled.

Sudhakar, 24 years-old was on his way to a star hotel to collect garbage, along with his cleaner and helper Arun.

Arun narrated the matter to the police that the toolbox fell off the autorickshaw and Sudhakar, who tried to pick it up while driving, lost control of the vehicle which toppled. Although Sudhakar sustained a severe head injury, Arun escaped with bruises.

Fire in a godown, loss of goods worth Rs 36 crore

On Thursday, electronic goods, clothes, Domestic appliances and other products stored in a godown were destroyed in a fire mishap. The loss has been put at Rs 36 crore.The godown is located at Indlawadi in Anekal Taluk.

Twelve fire tenders took more than six hours to drench the blaze. There were no casualties. Police suspects that electrical short circuit might be the reason for the mishap. The accident occurred at Future Supply Chain’s godown owned by Big Bazar Group.

A toddler hit by a goods vehicle

A one-and-a-half-year-old boy, have been mowed down by a goods vehicle .

Lakshmikanth, a toddler was killed in front of his house at Kalkere on Thursday morning. His parents were natives of Andhra Pradesh, work as labourers at an under-construction building at Kalkere. The family lives in a makeshift shed on the construction site.

According to KR Puram, traffic police, t he boy was playing in front of the shed when the speeding goods vehicle ran him over, killing him on the spot. The driver dumped the vehicle and fled.

Reprimanded by the principal, Student attempts suicide

On Wednesday night, a class X student attempted suicide by consuming an overdose of medicine that his mother was prescribed for respiratory problem, at his house in Coffee Board Colony.

Zubaid Ahmed, 15, student of Citizen School on Tannery Road, was scolded by the school principal for using mobile phone inside school premises. An annoyed Zubaid consumed more than 10 tablets that his mother used to take for respiratory disorder.

Zubaid fell ill and wasimmediately shifted to a nearby private hospital, where he was treated at the ICU.

Kris Gopalakrishnan donates Rs 225 crore to IISc

A brain research centre at a cost of Rs 225 crore will come up here in a joint effort between Indian Institute of Science and a trust formed by Infosys Executive Vice-Chairman Kris Gopalakrishnan and his wife.

IISc, the country’s premier university for scientific research and higher education, and the Pratiksha Trust today announced the collaboration to establish the Centre for Brain Research.

Govt keeping eye on “communal forces”: Siddaramaiah

Karnataka government today said it will not allow communal forces to create disharmony and keep an on “elements” spreading hatred through social media and mobile phones.

“We will not allow communal forces like Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Sriram Sene and others to create disharmony. We will take every step to curb them,” Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, while winding up the debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address in the Assembly.

Communal forces were spreading hatred for political gains in the light of the coming Lok Saba polls, he said.
