Andhra protestors stop Krishna water to Chennai

Nellore, December 12: Pro-united Andhra Pradesh activists today disrupted supply of Krishna water to Chennai in protest against Union Home Minister P Chidambaram’s announcement setting in motion the process for statehood to Telangana.

Upset with the statement made on Wednesday by Mr Chidambaram who hails from Tamil Nadu, activists cutting across partylines stopped the supply from the Kandaleru reservoir toChennai.

Students turn violent in Anantapur

Anantapur, Dec 12: Students of Sri Krishnadevaraya University turned violent and set cables on fire at BSNL godowns near the university campus on Saturday.

The students shouted slogans in support of integration of the state and attacked the godowns; thick smoke billowed from cables they set ablaze.

Reddy jubilant over Andhra HC order

Bellary, December 12: Ecstatic over the Andhra Pradesh High court order staying the order for closing six mining companies in AP, Minister G Janardhan Reddy said on Friday that it was a partial victory over the false allegations of illegal mining. Rosaiah completes 100 days as CM

Hyderabad, December 11: K Rosaiah completed 100 days as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh at a time when the state has been pushed into a political turmoil with agitations for and against a unified state gaining pace in different regions.

Rosaiah took over as Chief Minister on September 3 following the death of Y S Rajasekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash the previous day.

AP burns, 117 MLAs quit

Hyderabad, December 11: The turmoil in Andhra Pradesh over the creation of a separate Telangana state continues, as more MLAs resigned taking the total number to 117. The AP assembly has been adjourned till Monday and Chief Minister K Rosaiah has appealed for peace amid calls for a bandh in the state.

Non-Telangana regions of Andhra Pradesh today reported protests and bandhs while incidents of violence and stoning of buses were reported in towns of coastal Andhra and Rayasaleema against the Centre’s decision to carve out Telangana state.

‘Burqa won’t get you French citizenship’

Paris, December 11: Muslim men who force their wives to wear the full Islamic veil should not be granted French citizenship, Justice Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said.

Wading into the debate over whether to ban the burqa, Alliot-Marie said the government would await the recommendations of a parliamentary panel considering possible legislation to bar Muslim women from wearing the full veil.

But the minister went on to say that “there are a certain number of basics on which we must stand firm.”

Congress’ Rayalseema legislators demand united Andhra

Hyderabad, November 09: Ruling ruling Congress’ legislators from Andhra Pradesh’s Rayalaseema region, who have quit their posts today over the Centre’s decision to concede to the demand for a separate Telangana, have decided to step up their campaign for a united state.

“We feel division of the state is not a solution to the problems in the state. Instead, united state is the solution.

If division becomes inevitable, we want a separate Rayalaseema state”, government Whip Sailajanath told reporters.

3 Andhra MPs, 93 MLAs quit over Telangana

Hyderabad, December 10: The Centre’s decision to carve out a separate Telangana state today provoked a political backlash cutting across party lines from the rest of Andhra Pradesh with 93 MLAs quitting the Assembly.

Three MPs–two from Congress and one belonging to TDP– also threatened to resign from Parliament protesting against the decision to confer statehood on Telangana region in the wake of TRS leader K Chandrasekhar Rao’s ‘fast unto death’ protest, which he has called off now now.

It will take 1 or 2 years to set up Telangana state

New Delhi, December 10: Despite Centre’s announcement that it will initiate the process of formation of Telangana, the proposed state could see the light of the day not before a year or two considering the logistics it would be required for a new administration.

Home ministry officials said a mammoth exercise will be required — both at the Central as well as the state levels — to put things together for creation of the new state.

State Govt seeks Army deployment

Hydearbad, Decemeber 09: The Andhra Pradesh police has reportedly sounded the Army officials to be ready to step in, if necessary, during the ‘Chalo Assembly’ programme planned by Telangana activists on December 10.

Cong urges LS Speaker to cancel membership of TDPP leader

Vijayawada, December 09: Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) Secretary K Shivaji today urged the Election Commission (EC) and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to cancel the membership of Telugu Desam Lok Sabha Parliamentary Party (TDPP) leader Nama Nageswara Rao as he failed to show payment of lease amount in the affidavit filed by him ahead of the general elections held in April this year.

Addressing a press conference here, he claimed that Mr Rao had failed to mention in his affidavit the payment amount of Rs 27.26 crore due to Mines and Geology Department.

TRS creates ruckus, forces adjournment

Hyderabad, December 09: The Telangana agitation rocked the State Assembly today, resulting in transaction of no business during the session which lasted 37 minutes (9 am to 11.37 am).

Speaker N Kiran Kumar Reddy was forced to adjourn the House twice during this brief period when TRS members obstructed the proceedings and insisted on passage of a resolution on statehood.

Antisocial elements or Maoists in Telangana movement?

Hyderabad, December 09: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister K. Rosaiah Wednesday said ‘anti-social elements’ had joined the movement for a Telangana state. Police believe Maoists have penetrated the movement through students and other sympathisers.

While Rosaiah told reporters in the assembly premises that his government had received information about ‘anti-social elements’ and was looking into it, a senior police official pointed out that Maoists always supported the demand for separate Telangana state.

Cong T-MLCs cancel meet on Rosaiah’s advice

Hyderabad, December 09: Congress MLCs from the Telangana region cancelled their proposed meeting here today on advice from Chief Minister K Rosaiah.

They, however, wrote a letter to Congress president and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi seeking her intervention to untangle the Telangana knot. “In this extraordinary circumstances, we feel that the Congress high command and the UPA Government is competent to take a decision on the issue,’’ they noted.

Rayalseema legislators seek statehood

Hyderabad, December 09: In the wake of the intensification of the movement for separate Telangana State, the demand for formation of a Greater Rayalaseema State has come to the fore.

Ruling Congress MLAs and MLCs representing the Rayalaseema region met in the Assembly Committee Hall here today to take stock of the prevailing situation in the Telangana region. A majority of them demanded formation of Greater Rayalaseema State by merging Prakasam and Nellore districts with the existing districts of the region i.e. Kadapa, Anantapur, Kurnool and Chittoor.

Lathicharge claims life of Manikeshwar resident

Hyderabad, December 09: Old habits die hard and the residents of Manikeshwar Nagar, who knew Bodasu Narasimha, would vouch for it. On Monday, 66-year-old Narasimha, a daily wage labourer, stayed at home as his employer announced a holiday following the bandh call given by the TRS.

As was his habit for the last several years, he would often be spotted sitting on a slab near his house.

Unfortunately for him, when the police resorted to caning in Manikeshwar Nagar on Monday, the elderly man was sitting on the same slab.

SCR observes Civil Defence Day

Hyderabad, December 09: As part of the Civil Defence Week observance, the South Central Railway celebrated Civil Defence Day at its headquarters, Rail Nilayam, in Secunderabad today.

SCR General Manager MS Jayanth, who was the chief guest at the function, lauded the Civil Defence Demonstrations performed by the Civil Defence Volunteers. While tracing the history of Civil Defence, he said Civil Defence was established in the country under the Civil Defence Act 1968, had wings in all Central and State Government departments and consisted of civilian volunteers to serve civilians.

Uproar over demand to table Ranganath panel report; RS adjourns

Hyderabad, December 09: The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday witness uproar as several opposition members made a vociferous demand for tabling of the report of Ranganath Committee which went into the issue of reservation for minorities.

JD(U) and Left members stormed the well during Zero Hour demanding that the Chair direct the government to make public the report which, they said, was freely available under the RTI Act.

The agitated members included Ali Anwar Ansari (JD-U), Shabir Ali (LJP), P Madhu (CPI-M) and Syed Azeez Pasha (CPI).

250 TRS workers held across Telangana region

Hyderabad, December 08: About 250 TRS workers were arrested today across Telangana region as they resorted to violent acts during their agitation for statehood, police said.

The agitators damaged or burnt 12 private and public vehicles and properties in various incidents, they said.

Pro-Telangana students damaged two trucks of CRPF and a vehicle of state police in the Osmania University campus here.

About 15 TRS activists attacked a public transport vehicle at Ameerpet and set afire a government vehicle at Qutbullapur in the city, police said.

Telangana Marginalised

Hyderabad, December 08: FIFTY years of AP’s history shows that the economic development process has marginalized the Telangana region of the State. Before the merger with Andhra State, Telangana, which was part of the Hyderabad State, was doing well in terms of agricultural and industrial development.

But the process of development has been disrupted, ironically, by the policies pursued by the successive governments of Andhra Pradesh, formed with the merger of Telangana and Andhra State.
