‘Harassed’ husbands vow to fight for their rights

Shimla, August 17: A number of ‘harassed’ husbands from across the country today vowed to fight for their rights in conjugal disputes as they alleged that the law is favourable towards women in cases of divorce and custody of children.

About 150 such husbands, including former spouse of Chetana, wife of cricketer Anil Kumble, were present at the two-day meet that concluded here today.

Mother, son are classmates in West Bengal school

Kolkata, August 16: A mother and her son share the same classroom space as students in a West Bengal school.

Mother Anima Das, 35, and her son Palash are students of Class 11 in Basirhat Dandirhaat Nagendra Kumar Higher Secondary school in Kolkata’s neighbouring North 24-Parganas district.

Their subjects are also common as both have chosen Sanskrit, history, philosophy and political science, school head master Dipak Ranjan Mondal told.

According to Palash, his mother had quit studies when she was in Class 9 after she got got married.

Patient flees from hospital fearing swine flu

Malda, August 15: A 17-year-old boy suffering from cold and fever, has fled from a district hospital in Malda as he was not admitted in the isolation ward meant for swine flu patients.

Anikul Sheikh, resident of Sujanpur area, was admitted to the Malda District Sadar Hospital on Thursday after he complained of swine flu symptoms for the past few days, officials said Saturday.

Sheikh had returned from Mumbai about 20 days back and suspected that he was suffering from the viral infection As the hospital did not admit him in the isolation ward, he fled, police said.

Sydney, August 14: Alice Connors-Kellgren was surprised by her boyfriend’s new Facebook profile picture a few weeks ago: He was kissing another girl on the cheek.

The picture was up only briefly. And she figures it was just a friend. But she plans to discuss it with him when they’re back together this fall at Cornell University.

Russian use Rented husbands for support

Moscow, August 13: Is your man too busy to help you around the house? Well for women in Russia it is no longer a problem as they have a new service that allows them to rent a husband by the hour.

From fixing a shelf to changing a lock, rented husbands are proving to be the next big thing in Russia where the very lucrative business was launched in the northwestern city of St. Petersburg.

“Some women can’t even change a light bulb,” Alexander Yakovlev, who heads one of the renting offices, said. “I currently have 50 men to do this kind of work.”

Man discovers wife’s six other husbands in six weeks

Cairo, August 12: The police in the Egyptian resort city of Hurghada have arrested a woman on charges of polygamy, a media report said.

The 25-year-old waitress was married to seven different men. Then her seventh husband found out.

She met all of them in a cafe where she was employed.

According to the police, she married her men once every six days. After the weddings, she would lose interest in them and would begin a hunt for another husband. Once she was remarried, she would take all her belongings to her new husband’s home.

London, August 12: Want to stay happier? Just sport a smile and recollect something pleasant which happened the previous day, says a new study.

Researchers at the University of Hertfordshire have carried out the study and found that smiling and thinking of something good from the previous day help to make one happier, ‘The Daily Telegraph’ reported.

Other techniques that help in increasing happiness include expressing gratitude, smiling and carrying out an act of kidness, they said.

Woman says she was repeatedly bitten by otters

Drummond, August 12: An Austrian woman on vacation in Wisconsin is getting rabies shots after she said she was bitten by otters while swimming in a lake. Brigitte France, 51, told the Duluth News Tribune that she was swimming on Lake Owen near Drummond last Wednesday when three otters suddenly appeared. Feeling concerned, she swam to shore.

Just as she got there, she said, “there they were one on the right leg and one on the left leg.”

She said they swam off when she shook her legs, but not before biting her eight or nine times.

Female supervisors likely to be sexually harassed at workplace

Washington, August 10: Women who hold supervisory positions are more susceptible to workplace sexual harassment, according to a new study.

During the study, nearly 50 percent of women supervisors, but only one-third of women who do not supervise others, reported sexual harassment in the workplace.

In more conservative models with stringent statistical controls, women supervisors were 137 percent more likely to be sexually harassed than women who did not hold managerial roles.

A source from the unit reveals, “Govinda was shooting for a song in Run Bhola Run in Film City with Amisha Patel, Tusshar Kapoor and Celina Jaitley. Suddenly during the lunch break, he rushed out. Apparently, he had called for a bakri (goat) to come on the sets.

Men who do housework are better at attracting women

Washington, August 08: Women have a thing for men who are prepared to ‘chip in’ around the house, according to a new study.

The Oxford University study looked at relationships in 13 countries to reach the conclusion.

Researchers quizzed 13,500 men and women aged between 20 and 45 from each country about gender, housework and childcare responsibilities.

The research ranked British men as the third most likely to win women’s hearts through their devotion to domestic life.

Women eat less with men, but more with other women

Toronto, August 06: Women count their calories when dining with men, but not so when eating with other women, says a new Canadian study.

Research at Canada’s McMaster University at Hamilton near Toronto has found that a woman dining with a man will gobble fewer calories than if she dines with another woman.

Researcher Meredith Young says what a person chooses to eat at lunch or dinner is influenced by who they eat with and the gender make-up of the group, a university statement said Wednesday.

Dutch MP turn into ‘monkey’ by Turks

Istanbul, August 06: Turkish hackers have put an edited picture of the controversial Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders on hundreds of websites, which depicts him as a monkey.

The move to hack the Dutch websites was spearheaded by a Turkish hacker code named as “aLpTurkTegin”, Turkey’s Yenisafak newspaper reported.

The move was aimed at staging a cyber-protest against the lawmaker who is known for his anti-Islamic stance.

Wilders sparked outrage after he made the film Fitna that was considered to be sacrilegious by Muslims.

Sister convinces thief to surrender

Mumbai, August 05: This was an unusual raksha bandhan gift for a sister. A 19-year-old youth, who had decamped with valuables worth Rs1.50 lakh from his employer’s house in Charkop, surrendered before the police after his sister persuaded him to do so.

The police said that Ghaari was hired by an elderly couple – Dansukh Salah, 65, and his wife Saroj, 61 – on July 30 as a cook. Barely a day into the job, he decamped with the cash and jewellery.

On Independence Day, ‘harassed husbands’ to demand ‘freedom’

Bangalore, August 04: On India’s Independence Day Aug 15, a group of men will meet in Shimla and chalk out a plan for “equal rights” and “freedom” — from “harassment” by their wives.

“On Independence Day we will raise the issue of freedom and dignity of harassed husbands. More than 100 men, representatives of 30,000 other harassed husbands from across the country, will converge at a day-long meeting to come up with strategies to take on their wives,” Anil Kumar, president of the Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF), told IANS.

Baby crocodile found in hand luggage

Abu Dhabi, August 01: A foot-long baby crocodile wriggled out of a passenger’s hand luggage and caused panic on a flight departing from the United Arab Emirates, an official at Cairo airport said today.

A crew member on the EgyptAir flight from Abu Dhabi rounded up the wayward reptile and calmed passengers.

The airport security official says the animal was seized and given to the Cairo Zoo. He spoke on condition of anonymity.

Transporting exotic animals in and out of the Egypt is illegal, and none of the passengers on Friday’s flight claimed ownership of the baby crocodile.

Baby cut from mother’s womb found alive

Washington, July 31: A baby girl who was cut from her mother’s womb has been found alive, police said today.

The girl, whose mother’s body was found on Monday in a cupboard at her Worcester, Massachusetts, apartment, appeared to be in “fairly good health” at a New Hampshire hospital, Worcester Police Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurst said.

Two people have been arrested over the mother’s death.

New York ranked top US city for singles

New York, July 29: New York has been rated the best US city for singles, bumping Atlanta out of the top spot.

The Big Apple also edged past Boston, Chicago, Seattle and Washington, DC, which rounded out the top five cities in the Forbes.com survey.

Atlanta fell to No 6, followed by San Francisco, Los Angeles, Milwaukee and Philadelphia.

London, July 27: With her movie career going nowhere, Hollywood starlet Lindsay Lohan is now planning to try her hands on in creating her own range of sweets.

The ‘Mean Girls’ star, who is more in news for her public spats with lesbian lover Samantha Ronson than her work, is reportedly desperate to team up with Sugar Factory, a firm which manufactures “couture lollipops”, for a range of confectionery, Femalefirst reported.

“Lindsay wants to either be the face for a new line of advertisements or design her own range,” a source close to the actress said.

Robot model hits runway at Osaka fashion show

Tokyo, July 27: Japanese scientists have made a robot in an elaborate wedding dress walk down the runway at an Osaka fashion show, a development seen as a major advance in humanoid technology.

Developed by Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, the “pretty woman” in an elaborate wedding dress took part in the fashion show earlier this week.

Though encumbered by the dress, HRP-4C female robot easily navigated the ten metre runway at the fashion show.

Snake recovered from Orissa assembly

Bhubaneswar, July 25: The snake that had sneaked into the Orissa assembly Thursday was Saturday recovered from near the seat of the leader of opposition in the house.

“The snake was found coiled under a chair. An employee raised an alarm when the assembly session was over,” said Suvendu Mallick, a snake catcher, who recovered the reptile.

The assembly was forced to suspend its proceedings Thursday after the snake was spotted by the staff inside the house.

Snake catchers, security personnel and forest officials went into frantic search throughout the day to recover the reptile.

Wanted: Women to eat chocolate for an year

London, July 24: Scientists are looking for women willing to eat chocolate every day for an year — all in the name of medical science.

Researchers at the University of East Anglia and a hospital in Norwich, eastern England are trying to find out whether chocolate can cut the risk of heart disease and need 40 women to step forward and help.

Most of the women will have to eat two bars of “super-strength chocolate specially formulated by Belgian chocolatiers” daily for one year and undergo several tests to measure how healthy their hearts are.

Principal fired for jumping on students in cafe

Buckhannon, July 24: A high school principal who admitted jumping atop a pile of students during a cafeteria food fight has been fired.

The Upshur County Board of Education voted Tuesday to oust Brenda Wells from Buckhannon-Upshur High School. She’d been suspended since late May.

Wells said earlier this month that she jumped onto what she called “a dog pile” of four or five students while attempting to stop a food fight.

Wells said she jumped on the pile to relieve the tension. She said she was back on her feet before you could count to one.

She said it was all in fun.
