20 children injured during R-Day celebration in Karauli

Jaipur, January 26: Twenty school children were injured when portion of building in a school campus in Mau village near Hindon town of Karauli district, collapsed during the Republic Day celebration this morning.

According to police sources, the injured were admitted to hospital in Hindon from where one 11-year old girl was referred to the SMS Hospital here in serious condition.

13 killed in road mishap in MP

Seoni, January 26: Thirteen people were killed when their jeep collided with a bumper in Barbati village here in the wee hours today. The mishap took place around 0130 hours on the Jabalpur-Seoni national highway.

Most of the victims belonged to a family from Bag Bardia village in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh and were returning from Allahabad after performing some rituals at the Sangam, Dhooma Police Station-incharge M K Gupta said.

Barwell youths ‘target’ woman

London, January 26: Three teenagers have been accused of a campaign of harassment against a woman in the street where Fiona Pilkington was targeted, later killing herself and her daughter.

Fiona Pilkington, 38, killed herself in October 2007, when she set her car ablaze in a lay-by while she and her disabled daughter Francecca Hardwick, 18, sat inside.

An inquest into their deaths in September last year heard the family, including Ms Pilkington’s severely dyslexic son Anthony, suffered more than 10 years of abuse from a gang of teenagers on Bardon Road in Barwell, Leicestershire.

Drunken man falls off water tank, dies

Chennai, January 26: A Nepali private security personnel, who was in an inebriated condition, fell from a water tank at an apartment and died on the spot due to head injuries here on Tuesday.

Prem Dapa (25) of Nepal, working as a watchman in an apartment at Chepauk, was drunk on Monday night. In his drunken state, he mistakenly entered another apartment, Akshya Enclave, in Choolaimedu. He went to the fourth floor of the apartment and climbed atop the water tank to sleep.

During his slumber, he slipped from the tank and fell down on the terrace. He died on the spot.

Six naxals surrender before Maharashtra Home Minister

Gadchiroli, January 26: Six dreaded naxalites, involved in killing of 16 police personnel last year, today surrendered before Maharashtra Home Minister R. R. Patil at the police parade ground here on the occasion of Republic Day.

Six naxalites, including two women, who laid down their arms, were welcomed by Patil with flowers.

13 of a family killed in road accident

Bhopal, January 26: At least 13 people, including five women and two children, were killed Tuesday morning when the vehicle in which they were travelling collided head on with a dumper coming from opposite side in Madhya Pradesh’s Sivni town, police said.

“The deceased of a family were returning from Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh to their home town Chhindwara when the accident occurred around 3 a.m.,” said a police official, adding that all of them died on the spot.

Two Indian students attacked in Australia

Melbourne, January 26: Two Indian students were viciously assaulted in this Australian city late Monday night by a group of people who “made comments to the pair”, police said.

The attack comes little over three weeks after the fatal stabbing of Indian student Nitin Garg in a park in Yarraville in Melbourne.

The attackers made comments to the pair before one of the Indians was pushed to the ground and kicked at about 10.20 p.m. Monday. The 18-year-old Indian victim also suffered a wound to his left ear from what appeared to be an edged weapon, police said.

Six killed, fifteen injured in road accident

Kadapa, January 26: Six persons were killed and fifteen seriously injured when a state owned bus going to Nellore collided with a tree near Nakkaladinne village of the district this evening.

The driver lost control and the bus hit a culvert before running into a tree, official sources said.

All of them including the driver were killed on the spot, they said, adding that the bodies have been extricated with the help of locals and the injured hospitalised.

Man poisons self, family in Bankura

Bankura, January 26: A farmer poisoned to death his wife and children by serving them with poison-laced food before eating the same and committing suicide in Taldangra, Bankura, on Monday night.

It was debt and poverty which led Debdulal Ghosh, a habitual gambler, to take the extreme step, said police. The other deceased have been identified as Bandana Ghosh (38), Seema (16) and Subhankar (8).

“Ghosh’s body was recovered from a field near his house this afternoon. Primary investigations have revealed that poverty and debt led to the incident,” said Bankura SP Vishal Garg.

Week on, fire officer son’s body found in Ghaziabad canal

Ghaziabad, January 26: The police on Monday found the body of Ghaziabad Fire Station Officer A P Singh’s son Hemant, exactly a week after he was allegedly hacked to death by his 17-year-old younger brother.

Divers of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) recovered the body from a canal (part of the Hindon) between UP Gate police station and Ghazipur. Divers and police personnel were deployed for the search since January 19, the day the crime was discovered.

Mentally unstable father burns alive two daughters

Kolkata, January 26: A man allegedly burnt to death his two minor daughters in West Bengal’s Burdwan district Monday.

The police said Md. Faiaz locked his two children Tabassum, 7 and Tanu, 10, after setting them on fire in his house in Islampur.

Neighbours who spotted smoke billowing out of the house, informed the fire brigade, who broke open the door to find the two bodies. The girls were declared brought dead in the hospital.

Police said Faiaz was mentally unstable and his wife had deserted him.

Two arrested for kidnapping Delhi boy

New Delhi, January 26: The manager of a construction firm and the son of a retired police official were arrested for abducting a Class 6 student of G.D. Goenka School, Delhi Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal said Monday.

Kamal Goel, manager of a construction company, and his accomplice Vinay Mishra, son of a retired sub-inspector, were arrested Sunday for kidnapping the 11-year-old boy while he was on his way to school in Rohini area on Jan 22. They had taken Rs.1.5 crore ransom for releasing the boy.

Five policemen injured, seven abducted by Maoists in West Bengal

Kolkata, January 26: In a daring attack, Maoist rebels ambushed security forces personnel late Monday in West Bengal’s Bankura district, injuring five policemen and abducting seven, police said.

A large number of ultras separately attacked two security forces’ camps at Chandapathar and Satnala under Barikul police station in the district, 165 km from the capital, at around 11 p.m. leading to a heavy exchange of fire between the policemen and the Maoists for over one and a half hours, police sources said.

Three blasts rock Manipur, four injured

Imphal, January 25: Serial blasts rocked Manipur on Monday evening on the eve of Republic Day, injuring four people including two security personnel, officials said.

Two police commandos were injured in two blasts near a police housing complex in Imphal at around 7.30 p.m., while two people were injured in another blast in Nambol town, 20 km from Imphal.

Nine killed, 10 injured in Orissa road accident

Bhubaneswar, January 25: Nine people – all on their way to hospital for cataract surgeries – were killed on Monday when their vehicle collided with a truck in Orissa’s Bolangir district.

Ten people were seriously injured in the accident in Kandagada, some 20 km from the district headquarters.

“Five people died on the spot, two died when they were being taken to hospital and two succumbed to their injuries in hospital,” Bolangir district’s chief medical officer P.C. Sahu said.

Teacher killed by Maoists in West Midnapore

Jhargram, January 25: A school teacher was gunned down today by suspected Maoists at Jhargram in West Midnapore district. Guhiram Singh, a CPI(M) member and teacher at Chandabila primary school, was picked up from his house by a group of 40 Maoists and taken to nearby Kadakhota jungle.

There he was shot in the head and chest, police said. Passersby noticed the body and informed the police.

Posters stating that the teacher was “corrupt” and had been “punished” were recovered from the spot, they said. This was the second killing in a fortnight under Nayagram police station.

Nagpur man found dead in Mumbai

Mumbai, January 25: A former Nagpur Municipal Corporation official, who went missing three days back, died today due to suspected illness at Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway (CST) station in south Mumbai, railway police said.

Prabhakar Darbe was sitting in main waiting room of the CST. He went to drink water and collapsed there, they said.

Darbe was immediately rushed to St George”s Hospital where he was declared dead. Some medicines were found with him and initial probe indicate that he died due to illness, police said.

Maoists blow up BSNL control room in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, January 25: Suspected Maoists blew up a control-cum-equipment room of state-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district, causing an estimated loss of Rs.5 million to the company, police said Monday.

About 25 armed guerrillas Sunday night stormed into the room at Bakhrupara in Narayanpur, some 300 km south of here, and blew it up with explosives, said police officials in the district.

Narayanpur is part of the restive Bastar region.

Four killed, 30 injured as jeep overturns

Jaipur, January 25: Four persons, including three girls, were killed and 30 others injured when a jeep in which they were travelling overturned and fell into a 100-feet deep valley in Udaipur district, 420 kms from here.

“The mishap occurred late last night when the overloaded jeep overturned some 7 kms off NH-76 and fell into the valley,” police said today.

Police with the help of local villagers started rescue operation and rushed the injured to a nearby hospital where four identified as Laxmi (17), Sharda (13), Indra (19) and Nathi (40) were declared as brought dead.

Chandigarh catches fancy of vehicle thieves

Chandigarh, January 25: If you own a Scorpio, Safari or Bolero here, hold tight. With the highest density of vehicles among Indian cities, Chandigarh has become the favourite haunt of car thieves who seem to be especially fond of SUVs and jeeps.

At least three vehicles were stolen from different parts of Chandigarh every day in 2009, according to police records. What’s more, while there was an increase in the number of vehicle thefts, there was a sharp decline in the number of cases solved.

Two students held for motorcycle thefts

New Delhi, January 25: The Special Staff of West Delhi Police have arrested two students of Delhi University (School of Open Learning) for their alleged involvement in several cases of motorcycle theft.

Police said with the arrest of the two accused, they have recovered seven motorcycles and an auto-rickshaw.

Police have identified the accused as Shahdev Yadav (19) and Vishal Yadav (19). The group was headed by one Suresh who was recently arrested by the Gurgaon police.

Mentally challenged girl raped

New Delhi, January 24: A 23-year-old mentally challenged girl was raped allegedly by her neighbour in East Delhi, police said today.

Rajesh Verma (34) lured the girl into his home in Krishna Nagar and allegedly raped her yesterday, they said.

He threatened her not to divulge the incident to anybody.

The incident came to light today when the victim narrated the incident to her parents who informed police.

She was taken to a nearby hospital where a medical examination on her confirmed a rape.

A case was registered and Verma was arrested.

WCL officials booked for coal theft worth Rs 5 crore

Nagpur, January 24: CBI officials here today carried out raids on office and residential premises of six top officers of the PSU Western Coalfields Limited and booked them for coal theft worth over Rs five crore.

Acting on information provided by the WCL, the CBI sleuths found coal worth Rs 2.79 crore and Rs 2.50 crore missing from the stock of Rajur and Majhri mines under WCL, CBI Superintendent of Police John Thomas told PTI.

About 50 per cent of coal was missing from both the coal mines stock upon verification.

Efforts on to trace Hemant’s body

Ghaziabad, January 22: Efforts are on to trace the body of Hemant, the 21-year-old son of a senior Fire official, who was allegedly killed by his younger sibling and a cousin, police said today.

The search team was yet to find the body from Hindon river.

“Though the search team, involving 18 divers and two motor boats, could not find Hemant’s body but we are not disappointed. Our efforts are still on,” DIG Akhil Kumar said.

Huge quantity of explosives seized in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, January 24: A day ahead of shutdown called by the Maoists, a huge quantity of explosives was seized in Orissa’s Gajapati district and two paramilitary troopers were injured in a blast in Koraput ditrict Sunday, police said.

“We have seized more than 300 detonators and three gunny bags full of explosives this evening from Parlakhemundi,” Gajapti’s Superintendent of Police Sanjay Arora told IANS.

Arora said two people were arrested and the police were probing whether the huge quantity of explosives was meant for any disruptive activities.
