Nine-year-old Russian girl raped in Goa

Panaji, January 27: A nine-year-old Russian girl was raped by an unidentified man at Arambol beach in North Goa, police said today. According to the complaint filed by the victim”s mother at Pernem police station, her daughter was raped while she was playing in the beach waters yesterday, Deputy Superintendent Sammy Tavares said.

Rs 1.5 crore ransom paid for kidnapped boy’s release

New Delhi, January 27: An 11-year-old boy studying in G.D. Goenka Public School, Rohini, was allegedly kidnapped and released after his parents paid a ransom of Rs 1.5 crore.

Police arrested two of the accused – Kamal Goel (40) a manager in a multi-crore construction company and Vinay Mishra (25) a self-proclaimed national level boxer – and recovered Rs 1.4 crore from them.

According to the police, the boy, whose identity has been concealed on the request of the family, was kidnapped on January 22.

Woman, lover arrested on charges of killing husband

Muzaffarnagar, January 27: A woman was arrested today for allegedly killing her husband at Dholra village in the district last week, police said.

Rukmani Devi (25) allegedly murdered her 26-year-old husband, Binu, with the help of her sister’s husband Rajkumar, after Binu objected to their illicit relationship, SP Rajiv Malhotra told reporters.

Rajkumar has also been arrested.

4 killed, 12 wounded in building collapse in Karnataka

Bellary (KTK), January 27: Four persons were killed and five injured when a five-storeyed under-construction building collapsed and fell on a hostel in the city, police said today.

The mishap took place in Gandhinagar area of the city last night.

The dead included a 22-year-old student of the hostel.

An injured worker rescued from the debris told the police that at least 20 people were still trapped in the debris.

Rescue operations are on. Minister for Health B Sreeramulu and Minister for Tourism G Janardhana Reddy visited the spot.

Five policemen injured in stone-throwing

Dharmapuri, January 27: Villagers clashed with police over demolition of a temple here and five policemen were injured after being attacked with stones.

Earlier, police burst teargas shells after the crowd refused to disperse from demolishing a roadside temple at Kammalapatti village, 23 km from here, police said.

Five personnel, including a sub-inspector, were injured in stone-hurling. The incident occurred after villagers started demolishing the temple and reconstructing it in front of the house of a person, who objected to it.

Army jawan killed in road accident in Rajasthan

Jaipur, January 27: An army jawan was killed when he fell down from a military truck in the Mahajan firing range in Bikaner district, police said today.

Army jawans were returning in a military truck last evening after a firing exercise when Nagappa Jaipal, who sitting at the rear, suddenly fell down on the road and died on the spot, police said.

25 children hurt as balloon pumping cylinder explodes in Pune

Pune, January 27: About 25 children were injured today when a gas cylinder used to pump balloons exploded at a slum colony in Kothrud area here, police said.

The children who sustained minor injuries were admitted to a hospital and discharged later.

The mishap occurred when the balloons were being sold by a hawker in the densely populated area, police added.

Jawan injured in Pak firing, truce violation in J-K on R-day

Jammu, January 27: One jawan was injured when Pakistani troops violated the border truce by resorting to unprovoked firing for several hours as BSF personnel foiled two infiltration bids in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

The latest ceasefire violation came even as the country was celebrating the Republic Day. There were 16 infiltration bids and six truce violations along the Indo-Pak border in this month.

18-year-old girl kidnapped, raped at knifepoint

New Delhi, January 27: An 18-year-old girl was kidnapped from outside her house and alleged gangraped by three friends on Tuesday night. The incident was reported at 9.30 pm from Outer Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy area.

The police said the girl had come to Delhi from Bihar five months ago for medical treatment. On Tuesday night, the girl, who is staying with her uncle in the city, had just gone out when her neighbour, identified as 21-year-old Sanjeev, kidnapped her at knifepoint. The accused took her to his house and called two of his friends.

Mob frees arrested person from thana

Kolkata, January 27: Even as there was a general security high-alert on Republic Day, a serious lapse occurred when a police thana in the coastal district of South 24 Parganas in West Bengal was attacked, and an arrested person was freed from the lockup, allegedly by supporters of the Trinamool Congress, on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred when Republic day celebrations were in progress at the Chotomollar Khali thana, a newly-raised police station on an island in the Sunderbans.

Kolkata, January 26: Maoist guerrillas attacked two camps of joint security forces in West Bengal’s Bankura district, killing one policeman, injuring eight and abducting another, police said Tuesday.

A large number of ultras separately attacked two camps of the joint security forces at Chandapathar and Satnala in the district, 165 km from here, around 11 p.m. Monday, leading to a heavy exchange of fire between the policemen and the Maoists for over one and a half hours, police sources said.

10-yr RI for raping minor girl

Ghaziabad, January 26: A fast track court here has sentenced a man to rigorous imprisonment for ten years for kidnapping and raping a minor girl.

Additional District Judge Mukesh Kumar yesterday sentenced Arvind, who hails from village Fullerdhi, to 10-years RI and also imposed a fine of Rs 12,000 on him for kidnapping a minor girl and raping her in a jungle on May 25, 2006.

Two shot at during cricket match

Faizabad, January 26: A friendly cricket match between local teams turned ugly over a trivial issue with two players being shot at in the district today.

DIG (Faizabad) Akhil Kumar said the injured players Yogesh Sharma (18) and Vinit Tyagi (16) were admitted to a private hospital in a critical condition.

He said a clash broke out over a no-ball decision following which a member of the rival team allegedly opened fire in Shyam Park area.

Three persons of the rival team identified as Sonu, Imran and Anish were arrested. A case was registered, the officer said.

Man beaten to death by neighbour over petty argument

New Delhi, January 26: A 45-year-old deaf and dumb person was allegedly beaten to death by his neighbour following a quarrel involving their sons.

Police, however, are awaiting the post morterm report as they suspected that the victim might have died due to cardiac arrest since he had a history of chest pain.

The victim, Mohammad Kasim, who works as book binder, was involved in a fight with his neighbour Allaudin at Welcome here, the police said.

The incident happened after Kasim’s son informed him that he was hit by Allaudin’s child with a cricket ball.

18 injured in Orissa temple clash

Jajpur (Orissa), January 26: At least 18 persons were injured, six of them seriously, when a clash erupted today between supporters of two groups of priests inside the premises of Ananta Gopal temple in Orissa’s Jajpur district.

The temple also known as “Chhatiabata” at Chhatia turned into a battle field when supporters of “Mahanta” (head-priest) Pradyumna Dash and his two younger brothers fought over hereditary rights to be the temple’s chief priest.

Angry residents throw stones at North East Express

Patna, January 26: Angry residents today pelted stones at New Delhi-Guwahati North East Express after some Army men prevented a few youths from entering a coach at Barh railway station in Patna district, police said.

Army men travelling in the train prevented some youths from boarding a reserved compartment when the train stopped at Barh, the police said.

They called some locals who threw stones at the train in protest, they said.

VC assaulters yet to be arrested

Itanagar, January 26: Police are yet to trace the youths who had assaulted the vice-chancellor of the Rajiv Gandhi Central University K C Belliappa at his residence near here.

About 50 youths had dragged out the vice chancellor from his official residence, tore his clothes and badly assaulted him in the varsity campus in Papumpare district last evening. Belliappa suffered injuries on his head, left eye, face, neck and thighs, a university release said today.

Law student commits suicide. Is ragging the cause?

Ahmednagar, January 26: A student of a law college committed suicide apparently due to ragging, police said today.

Prashant Chitalkar, a second student of son of Fergusson College in Pune, committed suicide in Khadambe Rahuri taluka where he had gone to his uncle’s place. He ended his life by jumping in a well, police said adding the ragging angle could not be ruled out.

Additional Deputy Superintendent of Police Sunil Kadasane told PTI that they are investigating if ragging was a reason behind him committing suicide.

Police team charged with gang rape of tribal women

Hyderabad, January 26: The Andhra Pradesh police have booked a suo-moto case following allegations of gang rape of four tribal women by policemen at a village in Visakhapatnam district, a senior police officer said today.

Revenue Divisional Officer, Paderu, and police visited Bhaluguda village in Visakhapatnam yesterday and met two of the four women who alleged they were gang raped by a police team, the officer said.

Man arrested for running drug store without licence

Lucknow, January 26: A person has been arrested in Kanshiram Nagar district for allegedly running a drug store without a valid licence, a senior official said here today.

Ashish Yadav was arrested after it was detected that he was running a drug store without a valid licence from the competent authority during the Food and Drug Authority’s raid in Kanshiram Nagar yesterday, Principal Secretary D S Mishra said.

Medicines worth rupees two lakh were seized from the store, he said, adding that Ashish’s father Rajendra Singh Yadav was absconding.

Fire partially damages IUML office

Kozhikode, January 26: The office of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) at Kottappally near Vatakara in the district was partially damaged when unidentified persons set afire clothes dumped in the building.

Police said unidentified miscreants set ablaze clothes dumped in the veranda of the building in the wee hours this morning.

The window and door of the party office were damaged in the fire, they added. The area had recently witnessed clashes between CPI(M) and IUML workers.
