Five die in Delhi factory fire

Four children were among five people who died due to suffocation as a fire broke out early on Monday morning at a factory here.

The fire broke out at a factory in Begampur, west Delhi.

“Five people died due to suffocation, as fire broke out in a factory that made paper plates,” said a fire official.

Shravan Kumar, 17, Niranjan, 5, Nilesh, 11, Nitin, 26, and Shivam 15, died in the fire.

The fire was reported at 3.14 a.m. and eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

Dalit boy killed, hanged over affair with girl in Maharashtra

In a case of dishonour killing, a Dalit boy was killed and then hanged from a tree over his affair with a girl from an upper caste at a village near here.

The 17-year-old-boy was found murdered and hanging from a tree on the night of April 28 near Kanhoba hill, close to Kharda village in the district’s Jamkhed tehsil, sub-divisional police officer Dheeraj Patil said on Wednesday.

Chimney collapse smokes out 50 labourers in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, May 26: More than 24 hours after the chimney collapse at the Parichha power plant near Jhansi, not even one of the 50-odd labourers buried under the rubble could be evacuated despite the army, paramilitary and heavy machinery being pressed into service.

Though no deaths were officially confirmed since no bodies have been recovered, reports said the possibility of anyone emerging alive is negligible.

Crash investigators search site of Libyan plane

Tripoli, May 16: Dutch and American crash investigators are helping search for clues in the debris field of the airliner that slammed into the desert short of an airport runway in Libya’s capital.

Libyan authorities, meanwhile, have determined that one of those found dead at the site was not a passenger but a Libyan rescue worker who responded to the scene and died of a heart attack.

After ‘Solo’, novelist Rana Dasgupta has Delhi on his radar

New Delhi, April 13: Novelist Rana Dasgupta, who won the Commonwealth Writers’ prize for the best book 2010, is now writing a non-fiction volume on Delhi.

“The book is a kind of quest through many areas of life in Delhi, trying to probe how the city works, the problems and what does this confusion mean to us and the reasons to be horrified. The 21st century may be a significant moment in history,” Delhi-based Dasgupta told IANS in an interview.

Scientist commits suicide

Indore, April 11: A 30-year-old scientist at Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT) has allegedly committed suicide, leaving behind a note that he was “mentally tortured by his senior”, police said today.

Tirumala Prasad Tenka, a bachelor, was found hanging at his house in Rajendra Nagar locality last night, City Superintendent of Police Girish Subhedar said.

He was a scientist at RRCAT of Department of Atomic Energy for last five years.

Karzai: West tried to ruin Afghan elections

Kabul, April 02: President Hamid Karzai accused the West yesterday of trying to ruin Afghanistan’s elections, intensifying a showdown with parliament over whether foreigners will oversee a parliamentary vote this year.

Mr Karzai’s international reputation took a battering after a UN-backed fraud watchdog threw out a third of the votes cast for him in last year’s presidential election. He is now wrangling with parliament and the United Nations over fraud protection measures for a parliamentary vote due in September.
