Zoo Park to get free WiFi, experts fear harm to animals

As part of its effort to turn Hyderabad into a ‘smart’ city, the state government has set up WiFi routers at Hyderabad’s Nehru Zoological Park to offer visitors free internet services. This move might be intended to attract more visitors. However wildlife experts worry that the electromagnetic field emitted by these WiFi antennas can be harmful for the animals at the zoo. The emissions can adversely impact their natural defences, reproduction and behavioural responses, they warn.

Experts also expressed concerned that animals would be living in an environment where there was a lot of radiation. This could spell doom for them and the presence of a WiFi router in close proximity to animal enclosures could hamper the growth of plants as well.
