Vedik scriptures are evident that ‘rishis’ and ‘maharishis’ used to consume beef: Raghuvansh Prasad Singh

At a time when Lalu Prasad Yadav is facing criticism from his political opponents for stoking a controversy saying Hindus too eat beef, the senior RJD leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh created another furor claiming, that ‘rishis’ and ‘maharishis’ used to consume beef .

Raghuvansh Prasad Singh on Saturday said that in Vedas it is mentioned that ‘rishis’ and ‘maharishis’ used to consume beef.

“I don’t understand the point of making it so much of a big deal. Vedik scriptures are evident of Hindu saints and sadhus eating beef in ancient times,” he said.

The veteran RJD leader went on to say that the consumption of beef reduced with the rise of Buddhism and it was the latter that advocated against cow slaughter.

Prasad, however, claimed that beef does not mean ‘gomans’ (cow meat) and those who eat meat do not differentiate between ‘gomans’ and goat meat.

“Those who eat meat are not sabhya (civilised) people. Poor people eat beef to beat their hunger… Those who go outside (the country) eat beef. Even Hindus eat beef. There is no difference between beef and goat meat,” he told reporters.

Meanwhile, condemning Singh’s remarks, BJP leader Giriraj Singh said that the ‘whole clan of RJD has gone mad.’ “I am very much hurt by hearing this statement of Raghuvansh Prasad.

“I think Lalu and his party leaders are making these kinds of statements just for the sake of votes. I think the whole clan of RJD has gone mad,” he added.
