Uproar in Delhi Assembly over Jan Lokpal

New Delhi: The winter session of the Delhi assembly got off to a stormy start on Wednesday, with the BJP demanding the tabling of the Jan Lokpal bill.

The government must table the anti-graft bill in the house, thundered Vijender Gupta, who heads a three-member Bharatiya Janata Party group. All the other 67 seats in the house are with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The speaker said it was the first session of the assembly and the legislation could always be tabled later.

The AAP government has been under criticism for its failure to table the Jan Lokpal bill — its major election promise.

According to government sources, instead of the bill, the government will push for amendments to the existing Delhi Lokayukta Act.
