Tianjin explosions: Residents hold protests over compensation

London, Aug. 17 : People in China’s Tianjin City are holding protests over a demand for compensation from the government for damage caused to their homes by huge explosions on August 12.

According to the BBC, many people gathered outside the Mayfair Hotel where officials have been holding news conferences.

Residents argue that the chemical storage warehouse that blew up had been built close to their homes illegally.

The explosions had claimed at least 112 lives while 95 people are still missing.

A senior military officer said that “several hundred” tons of the toxic chemical sodium cyanide had been identified at two locations in the blast zone.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Monday visited the victims who were affected by the explosions.

An investigation is still under way to ascertain what triggered the disaster. (ANI)
