Teenaged girl dies mysteriously in Delhi

A teenaged girl died in south Delhi under mysterious circumstances, police said on Sunday.

According to police, unidentified people shot dead 19-year-old Hemlata, a matriculate, at her residence in south Delhi’s Bindapur area, near Jasola village.

“As per the post-mortem report, the victim has been shot twice in the head, causing her death on the spot,” a senior police official said.

Though a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered, police said the case was being investigated from all angles and the motive and identity of the assailants were not clear yet.

The victim’s family on Saturday told police that she had gone to check the visitor at the door at the ground floor after the doorbell rang around 5.30 a.m. When she did not return for some time, her mother went to look for her but found her lying in a pool of blood.

Hemlata was rushed to one private hospital and then to a government hospital, where she was declared dead.

Police, however, have observed many strange things about the incident which make it quite mysterious.

“Her (victim) family members did not inform us. They had told hospital (Chanan Devi hospital) staff that she fell from the stairs. But her injuries did not match the claims and doctors on duty called us,” a police official said.

Police said the victim’s mother and grandmother were at home when the incident occurred. She has a brother, who was in Gujarat on a business trip at the time of incident.

According to police, a possibility of honour killing can’t be ruled out yet, as the crime scene had been tampered with.

“Blood had been washed off. On being questioned, the victim’s grandmother said she was not aware of the blood’s significance and, therefore, cleaned it,” the officer said.
