Srinagar: Women in Kashmir are giving Qula (divorced) to their husbands if they refused to give up their drug addict habits.
It wasn’t easy for 27-year-old Rifat, who, for the last three years who tried her best to ensure that her husband should give up his drug habit but in vain. He sometimes under the influence of drugs becomes violent.
“For a moment he would agree with me but suddenly he would become violent and start beating me under the influence of drugs. Then I spoke to my father about it. I told him that I’m ready to live with him if he leaves drugs,” she told NDTV.
She at last give up the social sensitivities divorced her drug addict husband through Shariah court along with 40 Kashmiri women who recently divorced their drug-addict husbands.
“I don’t know why men have this notion that a woman can’t divorce her husband. They think only man has a right to divorce his wife,” said Rifat.
According to NDTV news, Grand Mufti Nasirul Islam, who heads the Shariah court in Srinagar, has gone through many cases where women are in abusive marital relationships with drug addicts.
In last one month, 40 divorces have taken place through Shariah court and decision was taken based on their medical reports.
“Under these circumstances a woman can ask for divorce” said Nasirul Islam, Grand Mufti, Kashmir.
The issue also draws attention to the increasing easy access to drugs and drug abuse prevailing in Kashmir.
