Seven arrested for conducting illegal sex determination tests

Chandigarh: Haryana Police have arrested seven persons, including two women, for allegedly being involved in conducting sex determination tests of pregnant women in Yamunanagar district.

Those arrested have been identified as Jasbir, resident of Ramgarh (Mullana), Gurmeet Singh, resident of Salempur, Minto, resident of Radauri, Ajit, resident of district Saharanpur and Om Singh, resident of Uttar Pradesh. Besides them, two women accomplices of the accused have also been arrested, police said.

The Health Department had been receiving complaints for several days that some people were involved in conducting sex determination tests of pregnant women, an official release said here today.

Taking serious note of the matter, a team was formed under the directions of the Deputy Commissioner of Police.

The team included Deputy Superintendent of Police, Joginder Sharma, Medical Superintendent, Dr Vijay Dahiya, Tehsildar of Jagadhri, Darshan Kumar and District Child Welfare Officer, Manisha Khanna, it said.

A decoy patient was deployed in order to nab the culprits after which they were nabbed from different places.

During investigation, Minto revealed that another accused Ajit used to conduct the sex determination test. He was later arrested on September 22, and remanded to police custody along with the others, they said.

Ajit revealed during investigation that he used to conduct the test at his home and had purchased an ultrasound machine, which was recovered from him by the police.
