New Delhi: The Supreme court has pronounced the judgement for 2,000 cases with in 9 months. Which were pending since five years.

Earlier in the tangled judicial system the appellant had to wait for a lifetime to get their cases disposed of.

India has the highest number of cases pending before courts. About 58,000 cases has been kept pending in SC itself. Vacancies in judiciary was a big hurdle to deal with the issue of pendency.

Chief Justice of India HL Dattu have taken a decision to clear all the pending cases beyond five years. “Five years will be the maximum for the old case. Beyond that no”. Said Dattu who retired earlier this month. He constituted four special benches earlier this year to clear the backlog of such cases pending since 2002.

These benches had given final judgement by the end of November 2015.

justice AK Sikri and Rohinton Nariman were leading the fight with the clearance of 1,232 taxation matters. Another bench headed by justice PC Ghose disposed 533 criminal appeals in March.

These benches used to sit regularly on all the five working days of the week. After the success of these two benches on July 14 justice Dattu constituted two more similar benches. One bench is led by justice Vikramjit Sen which exclusively deals with commercial matters. This bench decided 147 matters.

Another bench headed by justice FMI Kalifullah, which deals with regular appeals against conviction cases. This bench disposed of 52 final matters.

This speedy disposal has reduced the pending cases of 65,000, to 58,000. Justice Dattu said on the day of his retirement that .“I am very happy with the performance of these benches, especially the one that heard tax cases.”
