Saudi diplomat couldn’t be arrested as per Vienna Convention, says RK Singh

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former home secretary RK Singh on Thursday said the Saudi diplomat, who was accused of raping two Nepali women, had to be let go as per the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, adding that going against the convention could have put Indian diplomats serving abroad at risk.

“We have to follow this law as we also have diplomats in all countries, if we don’t follow this convention, our diplomats will be at risk,” Singh told ANI.

“Being a diplomat, he has diplomatic immunity, he cannot be arrested or prosecuted, we have to follow the convention,” he added.

Saudi diplomat Majed Hassan Ashoor left India yesterday.

The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations gives diplomats immunity from arrest, criminal prosecution and civil lawsuits in the countries where they are posted. (ANI)
