Rain lashes Tamil Nadu;40 people dead

Chennai:Heavy rain brought life to a grinding halt across Tamil Nadu on Friday and a day’s holiday was announced for schools and colleges in Tirunelveli, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore districts and holiday for only schools in Kanyakumari district. Anna University and University of Madras affiliated colleges have postponed their examinations.

“The examinations scheduled for Anna University affiliated colleges on November 12, 13 and 14 are rescheduled to December 21, 22 and 24 respectively,” said S. Ganesan, Registrar, Anna University.

“All examinations scheduled today in Madras University have been cancelled due to rain. New dates will be announced later,” said R.Thandavan, Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras.

Heavy rains in coastal parts of Tamil Nadu over the last few days have left around 40 people dead.

On Tuesday, there was a respite from rain in coastal parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry after a deep depression, which had intensified over the Bay of Bengal region, made a landfall near Puducherry.
