Ghaziabad: Tension prevailed in Ghaziabad after public and police clashed over arrest of a Delhi Police constable along with others.
Balraj Singh, a Delhi Police constable, was named in an FIR for taking out a victory procession of a Block Development Committee (BDC) despite it being disallowed.
The incident occurred in Tila Mor area, Sahibabad, in Ghaziabad. According to police, on Sunday during Block Development Committee (BDC) members election, the supporters of winning candidate Shakuntala took out a procession in the Nistauli village of Sahibabad.
Police said the rival group informed it over violation of rules. When police intervened to stop the procession, Shankuntala’s drunk supporters confronted with them.
Balraj Singh was among them along with Pradeep, Ranvir and a relative of Balraj, who had come to meet him.
Though police receded from the clash at that time, on Wedenesday when Balraj was going to resume his duty in Delhi, he was nabbed by the Tila Mor police post, Sahibad.
As villagers learned about his detention, they rushed to the police post and tried to forcibly release him.
The post incharge Radhey Shyam and constables sustained injuries in the clash with the villagers.
Soon police force from the other police station rushed and tried to calm down the agitated crowd. But a clash occurred during which the protesters used stones and damaged public property.
Police initially used mild force but when a huge crowd reached the police post, it opened fire. Two rounds of fire were used to disperse the mob. Later, all the three named culprits named in the old FIR were arrested.
“Balraj Singh who works with Delhi police has a criminal past. He was fully involved in the village politics. Being in the force he should have cooperated the investigation officer but he instigated violence,” said Superintendent of Police, City, Ajay Pal.
“So he has been booked under section 323, 452, 427, 504, 506, 147, 148 and some other sections of IPC. His crime is grave. It is peace in the area now,” he added.
