Propagate ‘ahimsa’ through films: Dalai Lama to Kamal Haasan

Chennai: Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama has asked Tamil film icon Kamal Haasan to propagate ‘ahimsa’ through cinema.

“He (Dalai Lama) opined that I could use my craft and medium to propagate the great philosophy offered to the world by India: ahimsa. I confirmed my faith in ‘ahimsa’ and said I will venture soon in that direction”, said Haasan who called on the visiting Dalai Lama along with his actor-friend Gautami.

He said his meeting with the spiritual leader here was “invigorating” and “purposeful”.

“Have admired his resilience and purpose. Being a fan of Gandhiji, it is not too far-fetched to become his admirer. In spite of the fact that I am a rationalist and hence not spirituality bent, my meeting was invigorating and felt purposeful”, Haasan said in a statement today.

Stating that his lack of interest in spirituality was matched by Dalai Lama’s disinterest in cinema, Kamal Haasan who last week turned 61, said, the spiritual leader told him that he has not watched a single movie not even on television.

“For a man of his position, he indulged in small talk with abandon, a sign of a man who had no worldly worries. Above all he loved the company of strangers and reminded me of 2000 year old Jain-Tamil poetry — Everywhere is my town, all are my kin”.
