Political party leaders join hands with students in demo

Puducherry: Leaders of various political parties joined hands with a section of students of Pondicherry University here today to urge the Administration to probe the alleged assault on students during their agitation in the campus recently in support of their charter of demands.

Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader V Narayanasamy,DMK’s Puducherry North wing convenor S P Sivakumar, president of BJP’s local unit, M Visweswaran, MLA, CPI local unit secretary R Viswanathan, former Secretary of CPI(M) V Perumal and representatives of various outfits of students and parents participated in the demonstration and condemned police ‘atrocities’ on the students.

Meanwhile the students who are agitating gainst the Vice Chancellor, demanding her replacement for alleged plagiarism and violation of human rights continued their agitation for the fifteenth day in succession.

A Relay fast by some students also continued in support of the demands, which included assured drinking water, 25 per cent quota for local students in admission to each of the disciplines in the university and adequate hostel facilities.

A two member committee of the HRD Ministry, comprising Joint Secretary to UGC and Director of Higher Education in the Ministry had camped in the university holding discussions last week in batches with students, staff, officers and management of the university.
