Policeman killed, 3 others injured in militant attack in Egypt

A policeman was killed today and three others were injured in Egypt as militants opened fire on a police vehicle carrying prisoners.

The vehicle was transferring the prisoners when the militants opened fire on it on Cairo-Fayoum road, killing a policeman and injuring three other conscripts, a security source said.

The injured were transferred to the hospital while the security forces cordoned the area and are currently searching for the attackers.

No prisoners have escaped during the attack, the source said.

Egypt has witnessed many violent attacks by militants since the January, 2011 revolution that toppled ex-president Hosni Mubarak.

The attacks targeting police and military increased after the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 by military following massive protests against his rule.

Over 600 security personnel have been reported killed since then.
