Pakistan, Afghanistan agree to resume talks with Taliban

Karachi, Dec: Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to take the first formal steps towards resuming the reconciliation talks between the latter’s government and the Taliban.

According to the Dawn, the decision about the next steps towards revival of the peace talks was taken during Pakistan‘s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif‘s long-awaited visit to Kabul for discussions on the reconciliation process, border management and other security matters.

The first steps will be taken by convening a meeting in the first week of next month under the recently formed ‘quadrilateral framework’ that also involves China and the United States.

The four countries will decide the venue as well as the level of representation.

During his daylong trip, General Sharif met Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Chief Executive Dr Abdullah Abdullah and the US and Nato commander in Afghanistan, General John Campbell.
