Pak poet- philosopher Allama Iqbal’s son passes away in Lahore

Lahore: Justice (Retired) Javed Iqbal, the son of Pakistan’s renowned poet-philosopher Allama Iqbal, passed away here on Saturday.

Pakistan Television reported that he was 91 and was undergoing treatment for cancer at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital.

Waleed Iqbal, the son of Justice (Retired) Javed Iqbal, confirmed the death of his father, saying that he had passed away at around 8 a.m. this morning.

His funeral prayers will be offered at 4 p.m. today in Lahore’s Gulberg area, the Dawn reports.

Justice (Retired) Javed Iqbal was a senior judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and previously the chief justice of the Lahore High Court (LHC).

He is survived by his wife Justice (Retired) Nasira Iqbal and two sons Waleed and Munib.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has expressed grief and sorrow over the demise of the former apex court judge, and prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul and commiserated with the bereaved family.

“The death of Javed Iqbal, who rendered great legal and literary services for the country, is a huge loss to the state of Pakistan. We lost an intellectual, a great jurist and a true Pakistani,” a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office quoted Sharif, as saying.

President Mamnoon Hussain and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan also expressed their grief. (ANI)
