P C George to resign as MLA

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Congress (M) rebel MLA P C George, against whom the party had initiated disqualification steps, today announced that he would resign as member of the Legislative Assembly before the next session.

George, who was removed from the post of Government Chief Whip after he openly challenged the KC(M) supremo and Finance Minister K M Mani and Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to prove their charges that he had acted against the interests of the ruling UDF, said he would not attend the present 13th Legislative Assembly anymore.

He said the exact date for submitting his resignation was not decided, but he would tender resignation soon.

KC(M) had filed a petition before the Speaker seeking disqualification of George as MLA contending that he had worked against the party and the UDF.

Hearing of the petition before the Speaker N Sakthan was progressing.

Chandy and PCC President V M Sudheeran had last week appeared before Speaker and deposed against George in connection with the anti-defection case against the leader.

They had stated that George had acted against the interests of the UDF and even fielded a candidate in the recent Aruvikkara bypoll.

Chandy also claimed that George is presently campaigning for the rival LDF front for the civic polls next month.

The depositions were made on a petition filed against George by the present government Chief Whip and KC(M) leader Thomas Unniyadan seeking his disqualification from the Assembly.
