One held for cheating; Rs four lakh, spurious gold pieces seized

The Chadarghat police here on Friday nabbed one P. Nagaraju of a three-member gang, who has been cheating the people by selling spurious gold pieces as original one.

Police said the accused mortgaged spurious gold pieces by stating they found gold pieces in their land and wants to borrow money by pledging them. The accused successfully cheated one A. Vinod Kumar of Malakpet and taken Rs 4.5 lakh by pledging the spurious gold pieces.

Police said principal accused Kumar alias Ramu used to befriend business people and calls them to his native place. He introduces them to accused No. 3 one Mahadevappa, who claims that he found some gold pieces in his farm land and needed money to perform his daughter’s marriage. To gain confidence, Mahadevappa gives some original gold pieces for examination. After gaining faith, the accused No. 2 Nagaraju delivers fake gold pieces and takes money from their prey.

On a tip-off that the accused were trying to cheat another person in the same fashion, the Chaderghat police laid a trap and apprehended him today and seized fake gold pieces, two cell phones and cash of Rs 4 lakh from the possession of the accused. Efforts are on to nab the remaining accused.

The police appealed to the people not to believe such confidence tricksters, who make friendship with criminal intention and offers gold at a cheaper rate. If any such persons one approaches, they may pass on information to the nearest Police Station. (NSS)
