No panic for Onions: Harish

Marketing Minister T  Harish Rao today appealed to the people to avoid panic for Onions whose prices in open market are skyrocketing. Irrespective high price in open market, the State government will provide subsidized onions for the people, he said. The state government brought adequate stocks of the Onions to cater to their needs, the minister remarked.

He was reacting on reports of people getting panic and expressing displeasure at the government for failing to bring down the Onions prices. There is no need of panic for the essential commodity, he stated. The State Government has taken all steps to provide subsidized Onions in specially set up Onion Selling Centers across the State, including that of Ryothu Bazars. “We are taking every step to ensure there is no shortage of this product in 89 centers set up for the purpose,  Harish Rao said. About 7.5 lakh of families purchased 15 lakh kilos of onions at subsidized rates (at Rs 20 a kilo) he said. Subsidized onions incurred an additional burden of Rs 4.5 crore on the government exchequer, he added.
