Nitish announces liquor ban in Bihar from April 1

Patna: Fulfilling his promises made before the Bihar Assembly elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced ban on sale of alcohol in the state.

The announcement made at an official event. “Liquor will be banned in Bihar from April 1, 2016”, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced on Thursday.

In the run up to the Bihar Assembly elections, the grand alliance had reached out to the women voters, promising that they would ban liquor in state if voted to power again.

With increase in liquor consumption in Bihar in the past few years, the demand for prohibition in the state has also become louder. Women specially from Dalit and backward castes have been on the forefront of protests.
