Visakhapatnam: A 12-year-old girl, working as a maid at a Navy sailor’s house here, was allegedly assaulted by his wife today for not completing certain domestic chores and admitted to hospital, police said.

The minor, identified as Geeta, was admitted in a hospital with injuries on her head and other parts of body, they said.

The incident occurred in the afternoon when Geeta was allegedly hit on head with a stick by accused Anjali.

The girl was rescued by Anjali’s neighbours who reached the spot after hearing her screams.

Anjali, her sailor husband Manoj Kumar and the girl hail from Bihar. They are currently staying in Indiranagar area.

“Primary investigation suggests that the girl was tortured and mercilessly beaten by Anjali,” said Malkapuram police station inspector P Ranganadham.

He said Anjali tried to mislead the police, saying the girl fell down and got hurt.

Police have registered a case against her under section 324 of IPC (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means).

“We are investigating the case through various aspects and have informed officials of departments of the Women and Child Welfare and the Labour for further action,” Ranganadham said, adding that so far no arrest has been made.

Police said that Anjali had brought Geeta along with her a few months back and the latter was staying with the couple at their house.
