Muslim woman inspiring idea: $1 donation to UNICEF for every hate tweet

Melbourne: Susan Carland, an academic and Muslim woman who gets bombarded with hateful tweets from trolls and Facebook messages has come up with a great way to get rid of it.

Susan, 34, is a sociologist who teaches at Monash University in Melbourne has decided to donate one A$ dollar for every hate tweet she receives to UNICEF charity. And she has already donated over A$1000 to UNICEF since she took the pledge over 2 weeks ago.

Writing in the Sydney Morning Herald Susan said: “I regularly get tweets and Facebook messages from the brave freedom-fighters behind determinedly anonymous accounts telling me that, as a Muslim woman, I love oppression, murder, war, and sexism.”

The Koran states “Good and evil are not equal. Repel evil with what is better.” I’d tried blocking, muting, engaging and ignoring, but none of them felt like I was embodying the Koranic injunction of driving off darkness with light. I felt I should be actively generating good in the world for every ugly verbal bullet sent my way.

As so often UNICEF were assisting children who were in horrific conditions that were the direct outcome of hate – war, poverty due to greed, violence, injustice.

She and her husband Waleed Aly, who is a lawyer and talk-show host, have been dubbed “Australia’s Muslim power couple.” But critics have also assailed Carland as a “terrorist sympathizer,” reports the Daily Mail.
