Minor girl attempts suicide after being ‘raped’

Hyderabad: A 14-year-old girl attempted suicide today by setting herself ablaze after she was allegedly raped by her neighbour in Nizamabad district of Telangana.

The girl took the extreme step after she was allegedly sexually assaulted by one Naresh (23) at his relative’s house in Bodapalli village this afternoon, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Armoor (Sub-Division), Ram Reddy told PTI over phone.

“The girl, a class ninth student, came back to her house and informed the matter to her mother. After that she went out and attempted suicide by pouring kerosene and setting herself on fire,” the DSP said.

The victim was immediately rushed to a hospital in Nizamabad district and was later referred to a hospital in Hyderabad, the senior police officer said, adding that she suffered 40-45 per cent burn injuries.

Her mother later lodged a complaint with police after which a case under relevant sections of Nirbhaya Act and POCSO has been registered, the DSP said.

“The accused has been taken into custody and was being questioned,” he added.

Meanwhile, the State Minorities Commission has taken up the matter suo-motu.

“Her statement was recorded after the intervention of the Commission by a Magistrate,” Commission Chairman Abid Rasool Khan said.

Khan spoke to the Collector of Nizamabad District and also to Superintendent of Police over the matter and asked for reports.

“Notice have been issued to the SP and Collector who need to file report before the Commission within three days.

Commission is taking steps to provide good treatment and also ensure strict and fair enquiry,” Khan added.
